IBCA Board of Directors Minutes

April 16, 2016

The meeting was called to order at 10:10 Am by President Justin Ohl at the Ballard Country Club.

The following were in attendance: Exec Sec Don Logan, Presidents Justin Ohl, Mark Core, and Tom Betz. BOD members Tom Lilly, Aaron Fichter, Joel Allman, Frank Howell, Mike Mandersheid, Brandon Clubb, Doug Newton, Brian Wheatley, Alan Jenkins, Jim Haag, Dwight Gingerich, Darron Koolstra, Bruce Eckenrod, Ras Vanderloo, Paul Sonius, Deek Schulte, Robert Maske, Zach Klaassen, Tyler Miklo, Mark Wiley, Verlan Nikkel, Thad Streit, Dan Druivenga, Aaron Thomas, Shane Rowlands, Denis Schaefer.

After introductions were made, President Ohl asked for the approval of the following appointments:

Derek Roberts of Maquoketa as associate NE 3-4A boys ( 1 yr term) Joel Allman of Pleasantville as Associate SE 2A Boys ( 3 yr term) Either Paul Sonius of West Hancock or Robert Maske of Pocahontas Area as associate NW girls 2-3A pending outcome of the election ( 3 yr term) Derek Sonderland as SW girls 2-3A associate ( 3 yr term) Brandon Clubb for a 1 yr term as SE associate boys 3-4A ( 1 yr term) Also a 2A boys SW to be named and perhaps an associate as well ( 3 yr term) and NE 1A Boys replacement and associate for Brandon Clubb ( 2 yr term) Mike Sconsa as NE Girls 2-3 A associate ( 3 yr term) Aaron Fedderson of Williamsburg as 2-3A SE girls associate ( 3 yr term) Dane Byerly as SW Boys 2-3A associate ( 3 yr term) Justin Ohl as SW 3-4 A Associate ( 1 yr term) M/MS Betz and Mandersheid all ayes

The agenda was altered to allow some general reports prior to breaking for Standing Committee Meetings.

Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as presented. M/MS Thomas and Mandersheid All Ayes

Sec Logan presented the updated financial report . Prediction is for the year to end in the black. Checking balance for the year is 16, 392.94 with anticipated expenses running another 15,500. Investment account balance was 59,633.30. Income for the eyar was 91,516.99 with another 1495 anticipated. Report was approved M/MS Nikkel and Newton All Ayes

Sec Logan than presented the membership data for each class and region. 334 of the 366 schools joined ( 91%). Total listed membership was 2124.

Standing Committees then met for about 75 minutes prior to lunch.

After lunch, Sec Logan reported on the Spring Ballot for BOD. All Boys 2A and Girls 2A-3A are up for election. Ballot will go active on the website on Friday April 22 and be open for 30 days. There are 3 year terms.

Sec Logan shared plans and times for the National High School Basketball Coaches Congress on July 12-14 in Kansas City. Hopefully several from the IBCA can attend.

The Regional and Sub-state Coaches of the Year were reviewed and support offered by BOD members for various state winners. Elected as State Coach of the Year winners are: Girls 1A – Nate Sanderson of Springville, 2A – Jay Schuiteman of Unity Christian , 3A- Robert Maske of Pocahontas Area, 4A- Curt Klasshsen of Mason City, and 5A – Scott DeJong of Ankeny Centennial On the Boys’ side 4A- B J Windhorst of Valley WDM, 3A- Ryan Luerhsmann of Xavier, 2A- Al Marshall of Cascade , 1A – Kiley yates of South O’Brien.

The Paul Maaske Memorial COY awards went to Nic Nelson of Briar Cliff Men and Bob Amsberry of Wartburg women.

The standing committees then offered their reports.

Clinic- Aaron Thomas and Mike O’Connor are chairpersons. Discussion was had about how the organization of the speakers and clinic was set and the various needs of sites to hold the clinic. M/MS by Thomas and Sonius to have clinic fee set for 2106 at $90 per person in preregistration, $100 at the door or late. Group registration( more than 7) would remain as at school maximum of $640. All ayes

All Star- Verlan Nikkel and Jim Haag are chairpersons. 2016 games went very well. Nay positive comments and feedback reports. Date is set for March 25, 2017 at Dallas Center-Grimes High School. Major goal is to network with Communication Committee to better publicize the event and outcomes.

Communications - Derek Roberts and Larry Carlson are chairpersons – Discussion about the operation of Facebook ( need to rework it), Twitter, and Instagram accounts. The webpage also needs updating. The Newsletter seemed to go over well and will be quarterly in the coming year.

Membership – Doug Newton is chairperson. Discussion was had on the fall push for membership. Emphasis on having it all done on line for information collection purposes. Having a bulk email process will help this as well. A list of benefits for joining the IBCA will be created for dispersal as well.

Special Projects - Golf Outing plans were finalized August 1 , 2016 at tara Hills Country club 1846 70th St Van Horne Iowa. It will eb a 4 man best shot format, but not tournament. $160 per team. Includes cart, 18 holes, lunch. July 15 deadline for sign-ups. 72 total golfers will betaken on first come, first served basis. 11:00 AM shotgun start. Other amenities are being explored as well. M/MS Mandersheid and Wiley to approve this project. All Ayes

Mentoring of new coaches 9 1-2 years as heads0 was discussed. A New coach checklist will be developed as well as a directory of openings and changes. Mentoring to be formalized in the fall. BOD members and “Alumni IBCA” coaches will be the contacts. M/Ms Betz and Miklo All ayes

The “Team First” Award was discussed. This will be an option for each head coach for one player on his team. M/MS Newton and Betz. All Ayes

Awards - Mike Mandersheid is Chairperson . The list of awards and processes were reviewed. A procedure that must be followed will be developed for the naming of All Sub-state and All-Region teams. That document and policy to be part of By-Laws in the Fall.

Discussion was held about the need for and make-up of an Executive Committee. It will be named in the fall.

Discussion was held about topics t present to the IGHSAU through Brian Wheatley. That meeting is Wednesday April 20.

Further discussion was held about IHSAA Advisory meeting on April 22 and the topics at hand. IBCA to ask for discussion on Championship games flow, Seeding procedures at all levels, shot clock and halve discussions, plus a revamping of the entire State Tournament process.

Sec Logan presented the updated By-Laws and asked all BOD members to make themselves aware of them as each has a job description/expectation.

The fall meeting date was set for Saturday August 20th at 10 Am at Ballard Country Club again
