COURSE DESCRIPTION: IB Mathematics SL is a course designed for students planning to include mathematics as a major component of their studies, either as a subject itself or within courses such as physics, engineering, and technology. Students are expected to have a solid foundation in mathematics and be competent in a wide range of analytical and technical skills. This course will review Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Methods concentrate on the application theory to real environmental situations. Topics of study include: set and number theory, elementary coordinate geometry, equations, and inequalities, functions, (linear quadratic, piece-wise, polynomial, radical, and rational), exponential and logarithmic functions, conic sections, trigonometry, vectors, sequences and series, binomial theorem, statistics, and probability. Students are required to work independently and develop and investigation mode, which can be applied to other subject areas, to common world occurrences and to topics that relate to the self-interest of students. The course includes a portfolio based on different areas of the syllabus, which includes two mathematical papers; a mathematical investigation and mathematical modeling.

OUTLINE/CALENDAR: Six weeks lesson plans are kept current on Blackboard. (kleinisd.blackboard.com)

STUDENT ABSENCE PROCEDURE: Students are allowed the same number of days that they were absent to make-up homework. If a test is missed, the student should make it up as soon as possible to maximize performance. Two weeks is the typical make-up time limit for testing.

TEST DAYS: Standard test days are Mondays and Thursdays. Tests are allowed on other days with principal approval. Due to the nature of the course, we will often test on non-test days. Students have more than two tests on any test day, may take the test at an alternate time.
