1.  Course Overview

2.  This course is a study of global business practices and its environment, incorporated with the case discussion on the Chinese/Taiwanese business operation/culture. Its primary activities involve, but not limited to, lectures, seminars (survey and discussion), mini-research projects and presentations. Meanwhile, this course includes four to five local business/cultural excursions through which students are able to learn/observe the local/Taiwanese business operations and managerial culture. Throughout the program, students will earn their general and field knowledge in the topics of Globalization, Cross-Cultural Business, International Business Ethics, International Trade, Foreign Direct Investment, Regional Economic Integration, International Strategy and Organization, Analyzing International Opportunities, Selecting And Managing Entry Modes, Developing And Marketing Products, and Hiring And Managing Employees.

3.  Course Objective/ Student Learning Objective

Throughout this program, students will be able to:

a.  Learn and gain field/professional knowledge of business and trade theories and practices in both the global environment and Taiwanese business contexts.

b.  Properly evaluate international business issues – challenges and opportunities, and the contemporary Taiwanese business environment; apply managerial/professional strategies in global business planning and economic analysis.

c.  Develop and analyze business project(s), which is to enhance students’ analytical/reasoning, discussion/debate, and research and presentation skills.

4.  Course Grade

a.  Bi-weekly seminar assignment (2 x 30 points) 60 points

b.  Homework (1 x 30 points) 30 points

c.  In-class quizzes (4 out of 5; 4 x 20 points) 80 points

d.  Project/presentation (20 points (W) + 20 points (O)) 40 points

e.  Class attendance (mandatory; 18 meetings) 36 points

i.  Full attendance: Bonus = 5 points

Total score = 60 + 30 + 80 + 40 + 36 = 246 (points)

Important Note:

(a)  Due dates of class activities are listed as (xxx) within parenthesis in the course schedule (the right column). The instructor will announce any class-related changes ahead of time, if any. Late turn-in of activities is NOT acceptable and totally discouraged.

Ø  Only four (higher scores) of five in-class quizzes will be recorded.

(b)  Class attendance is required and taken on the daily basis. It is included in student’s grade evaluation and bonus points are offered for full attendance throughout the program.

(c)  Any form (e.g. cheating, plagiarism) of academic misconduct will NOT be tolerated. Any student found guilty of such misconduct will be subject to disciplinary actions (e.g. zero scores and/or other consequence).
