The University will award the above scholarship to applicants who have good academic potential, and who are likely to be

successful in their chosen degree course. The Ian MacDonald Memorial Scholarship will

be awarded to a candidate who shows considerable aptitude and ability for their chosen degree course and is able to demonstrate need for financial support.

You should note that only applicants domiciled in the UK and classified as Home Fees are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

The Ian MacDonald Memorial Scholarship is valued at £2,500 per annum and will be awarded to the successful recipient for the full length of their undergraduate degree programme, subject to the recipient successfully completing each academic year.

The scholarship will lapse if the scholarship recipient ceases to study their chosen degree course or leaves the University of Aberdeen. Should a scholarship recipient take a year out, for example, to do a work placement or to pursue other interests, then the scholarship payments will be stopped during this period and will only be resumed when the student returns to study on this course. Where a student is required to repeat a year because they failed to reach the academic requirements, payments will not be paid for the repeat year.

To be considered for a scholarship you will need to have applied to the University of Aberdeen for a place starting in September 2015; to be awarded a scholarship you must receive and then firmly accept an offer, either conditional or unconditional, of a place at the University. The scholarships can only be held by students of the University – they cannot be transferred to another institution.

A Scholarship Committee will consider the applications, and make the award. In making the decision, the selection panel will take into account your educational background and achievements, your interest in your chosen degree subject, and other relevant information given in your application form, and the statement from your referee. The information provided in your UCAS application will not form part of the scholarship selection process.

Scholarships are only paid while you are studying at the University of Aberdeen.

The scholarship will be awarded to applicants who are deemed by the University to have good academic potential. The offer of the scholarship will be conditional on admission to the University. Only students accepted for an undergraduate degree will be eligible for consideration.

How to Apply

Complete the application form, and return it by post to the University along with your reference. You will receive correspondence acknowledging receipt of your application.

The Personal Reference

You will need to provide a supporting Reference. It should be completed by someone who is familiar with your circumstances and your recent studies - or with your intellectual capabilities - whether at school, college, access course or in employment. Someone from your school or college (normally but not necessarily the Head Teacher or Principal) or someone from your place of work who has a supervisory or managerial role would be a satisfactory referee; someone in a responsible position who knows you well would be equally appropriate. The form for your Reference should be given to the person you have nominated. The person writing the Reference should give it back to you, in a sealed envelope. It is then your responsibility to ensure that the reference is enclosed with your application.

The Reference provided will form part of the Scholarship selection process. It is helpful if the Referee explicitly deals with the Scholarship Selection criteria and refers to information detailed by the applicant in the Scholarship Application. The Reference should not necessarily be a repeat of the UCAS Reference.

NB: Applications where the candidate has written the supporting reference, or where no UCAS Personal ID Number is given will not be considered by the Scholarship Panel.
