I would like to share with you what many other educators consider to be the Four Levels of Learning:

  • Level 1:The student reads the textbook, views the instructional videos, takes notes, but has absolutely no understanding of the concept being taught.
  • Level 2:The student reads the textbook, views the instructional videos, takes notes, and can understand the concepts while watching the instructional videos or reading the textbook; but the student is unable to work theWebAssignproblems that are assigned even when using notes, thetextbook, or video links.
  • Level 3:The student has an understanding of the concept while reading the textbook and watching the instructional videos, and is able to work theWebAssignproblems that are assigned; but the student must use notes, the textbook,multiple-choice answers, and/or video links in order to answer the question correctly.
  • Level 4:The student has a true understanding of the concepts and can work the problems that are assigned without the use of notes, the textbook, video links, or the given multiple-choice answers.

Manytimes in anonlinemathcourse, students are content to get to Level 3 Learning. Level 3 may get you a good grade on a homework quiz, but Level 3 Learning will not produce a successful result on the final exam. You have to be sure that by the time you come in to take your final exam that you have achieved Level 4Learning.

Duringthe final exam, you will not have notes, the textbook, or multiple-choiceanswers to fall back on. You have to rely completely on what you know.I cannot stress enough to you how important it is to be sure you've reached Level 4 Learning on all the material that this coursecovers.

Tohelp you know whether or not you have achieved Level 4 Learning, I have posted skill quizzes under the Course Content tab in Blackboard. You can complete these skill quizzes under the guidelines that you will be subjected to during the final exam. That means you can attempt to complete them without the use of notes, the textbook, or multiple-choice solutions. If you can answer the questions on theskill quizzes solely on your own knowledge, then you know that you have achieved Level 4 Learning. These skill quizzes will also give you a preview of the wording and setup of the questions you will have on your final exam and make for an excellent review tool. (The answer keys are also provided under the Course Content tab so that you can check yourproficiency.)

Ifyou cannot answer the skill quiz questions solely on your own knowledge, then you need to find some way to bolster your performance and achieve Level 4 Learning. This can be through visiting the Learning Assistance Center (LAC), attending the Math Marathon Help Session (December 10th2-4pm in CAD 317), meeting with a tutor, or stopping by my office to meet withme.
