WHAT IS SKYLIGHT ACCESS?

Skylight Access transforms the existing television sets in patient rooms into interactive entertainment and communication platforms, enabling numerous applications at the bedside. The simple, easy to use TV interface for patients and staff offers bedside patient entertainment services, hospital information, on-demand health education, interdepartmental service requests and patient satisfaction surveys.

NAVIGATING THE SKYLIGHT ACCESS SYSTEM

Selecting options from the Main Menu

  • Both the Skylight Access pillow speaker and keyboard have directional Arrow Keys to highlight menu choice.
  • Use Arrow Keys to highlight an option (a yellow “focus box” will surround the option after the selection has been made).
  • The Skylight Access pillow speaker has a green ‘OK’ button and the Skylight Access keyboard has an ‘Enter’ button. Pressing these buttons advances the TV to the next screen.

About the nurse call device (pillow speaker) and keyboard

  • The Skylight Access pillow speaker is powered electronically. If the TV doesn’t respond to the pillow speaker, check the connection where the call box attaches to the bedframe.
  • The Skylight keyboards are battery operated with an infrared remote that must be pointed in the direction of the TV to operate. If the TV doesn’t respond to the keyboard,
  1. Check the keyboard to ensure nothing is blocking the infrared beam
  2. Check the position of the keyboard to ensure it is pointing toward the TV
  3. Replace the batteries in the keyboard

HOW ARE WE DOING?

Patients have the opportunity to submit real-time feedback regarding their stay at VanderbiltUniversityMedicalCenter, providing staff an opportunity for service recovery. Alerts are immediately sent to nursing staff when a patient submits an unfavorable response.

MOVIES/GAMES/WEB SERVICES

Patients and family members have access to movies, games, and internet access.

Movies: On average, 25-30 on-demand movies are available and rotated quarterly. They can be previewed prior to watching. The movies are “airline” rated and have been edited for the hospital environment. Movies can be accessed for a 24 hour period for only $6.95. Payment can be entered through the system using a credit card, gift card or called in to the Skylight center.

Games: A selection of games (dice, card, strategy) are available along with “How to Play” instructions. They are suited for the hospital environment.

Web: Web access is available using the wireless keyboard made available upon request. Because the system uses a TV-based web browser, not all sites are optimized for viewing on a TV. Although email is accessible through Skylight, not all accounts (AOL etc.) are viewable.

Note: Web-filtering software is in place that restricts access to certain websites not suitable for viewing in the hospital environment.
