Work Schedule:Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Reports to:Directorof Engineering and Architectural Services

Supervision:No other employees

Coordinates with:All components and levels of the University, academic, financial, auxiliary enterprises and student services. Maintains contact with System-Wide-Services, technical representatives, and contractors relative to various construction projects. Meets with State and municipal officials for planning, permitting, and approvals.

II. Statement of the Job:

The Building Construction Engineer maintains responsibility for the completion of assigned University construction, renovation, remodeling, repair, and other projects related to University operations and programmatic needs, while ensuring the continuing safe, efficient and effective operation of the University physical plant.

III. Essential Functions:

  1. Monitors and inspects construction work in all phases of construction to assure quality and completeness. Authorized to make necessary changes to yield the desired end result.
  2. Prepares and/or reviewsbidding documents, plans, specifications and cost estimates for construction, renovation/alteration and major maintenance projects.
  3. Designs,reviews and manages construction of roofing system replacements, exterior wall waterproofings, building and office alterations, heating system alterations, building controls systems, lighting systems, passenger elevators, building window replacements, boilers, and other building and University campus related improvements.
  4. Acts as owner’s representative for building renovation and construction projects.
  5. Provides engineering and other technical assistance in the operation and maintenance of the campuses concerning building problems (i.e., roofing, heating, ventilation, structural) and maintenance.
  6. Prepares Construction Documents for University projects; including specifications, drawings, bidding and Construction Administration. Additionally, develops designs, estimates, prepares purchase requisitions, obtains bids or quotes and oversees construction to assure conformance to specifications.
  7. Assists associates in the design of building electrical, heating, building controls systems, ventilation and other systems.
  8. Makes recommendations concerning design, repairs, funding of physical plant related matters, and preparation of engineer determined alternatives.
  9. Assists in the development and implementation of energy conservation modification projects.
  10. Maintains contact with various components of the University community relative to building and construction projects.
  11. Maintains contact with State and Municipal officials, engineers, technical representatives, contractors and architects relative to building and construction projects.
  12. Coordinates reviews, approvals and licenses applications with local, state and federal authorities.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

IV. Marginal Functions:

Serve on University committees as requested.

V. Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

VI. Budget Responsibilities:

  1. Develops project cost estimates, develops budgets, and manages multi-million dollar construction projects within available budgets.
  2. Assists in development of project and construction budgets, maintains accurate records of purchases, expenditures and processes appropriate charges.

VII. Public/Professional Activities:

Maintains current knowledge of developments in building design and construction through seminars, periodicals and meetings with other professionals.

VIII. Contacts (Internal and External)

  1. Works with staff at all levels of the organization and System Wide Services.
  2. Works with architects, engineers, contractors, vendors, technical representatives and State and municipal officials.

IX. Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  1. Knowledge and skill in building construction engineering.
  2. Knowledge and skills in preparation of plans, specifications, purchase requisitions, bids, quotes, record keeping and payment in accordance with standard construction practices.
  3. Knowledge of building codes and standards including BOCA, NFPA, NEC, ADA.
  4. Good interpersonal, organizational and planning skills. Ability to communicate effectively and work with staff at all levels.
  5. Ability to reach, kneel, stand, walk up and down stairs, climb ladders to heights of 20 feet.
  6. CAD experience.

X. Qualifications:

Required:

Education:Minimum four-year degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or other engineering field closely related to building construction or relevant equivalent field experience coupled with formal education.

Experience:Minimum of four years experience in the building construction field.

Training:Training and/or experience in the building construction field.

License:Valid driver’s license.

Preferred:Master’s degree preferred.

Registration:Professional engineering registration, AIA, or ability to obtain. Consideration will be given to relevant Industry and Association certifications and accreditations such as APPA, CSI, APE, AEE, IFMA, LEED, etc
