k / I remember when this picture was taken. The law had just changed in my state. Before, black children had to go to black schools, and white children went to white schools. That morning, my parents told me that I would go to the white children’s school. I was excited. I had always dreamed of being able to go to the beautiful school across town. I used to imagine what it must look like inside. I put on my prettiest dress and started to walk outside. Four policemen with yellow bands on their left arm were waiting for me. They told me that they were going to walk with me to school because they had been getting phone calls all morning warning of possible danger. As we got closer to the school, I saw that people were yelling and throwing things at other black children. We finally arrived at school. What I thoughtwould be a wonderful day turned out to be terrible! After school, I looked for my friend Sally. We would always meet and walk home together. I saw her by the school door. She had clearly been crying. She also had had an awful day. Somehow, we both managed to finish the year, graduate from high school, and even get university degrees.
For many years, I used to feel hate for the white people who had been so cruel to us. Now, I understand that they were just ignorant. Since that terrible day, I have become friends with many wonderful white people. Nowadays, Sally and I are both working for an organization that promotes racial peace. By the end of this month, we will have been working there for one year. I like my job, but my ultimate goal is to get a job with the United Nations. Lately, I have been doing a lot of research about the causes of racial discrimination. The problem has existed for thousands and thousands of years. I have actually been invited to speak on national news about the issue. I will be meeting with the news director next week. I am a bit nervous, but I am sure everything will go well. I will have finished most of my research and hopefully will have begun writing my report. Of course, I’m going to practice a lot. Sally has told me that she will watch me and give me advice so I won’t look stupid. She suggested meeting at 3pm on Tuesday, but I will be getting my hair cut then, so we decided on 4:30pm, instead. Soon, 20 years will have passed since that awful day shown in the picture. It’s hard to believe. We humans have made a lot of progress since then. I wonder what surprises 20 more years will bring.
