Statutory Declaration

I, ….name….. of …….address….. do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows:

I was employed as an Apprentice Electrician by London Borough of Southwark between September 1988 and February1993 and then as a fully qualified Electrician between February 1993 and November 1996.

I cannot obtain a reference from London Borough of Southwark as they have stated that they cannot locate records regarding my employment with them due to the amount of time that has elapsed.

I have also contacted the training institute that I attended and they are also unable to find records of my attendance.

My apprenticeship combined both on site training, under the supervision of fully qualified electricians at various residential and commercial sites, and off site training at South Thames College.

My average working week was 37.5 hours.

The first year of my apprenticeship was structured in a block release format, that is to mean, four weeks on site training followed by four weeks off site training at college and so on. Subjects covered at college in a classroom included Electrical Principles, Installation Technology and Wiring Regulations, and in a workshop I was taught how to install electrical equipment using the appropriate tools and methods.

On site I was trained by qualified electricians to select the appropriate materials to install electrical equipment using the correct tools in a safe and efficient manner.

The first year of my apprenticeship, after examination, led to the award of the City and Guilds 236 Part 1 Certificate in Electrical Installation Competences. This certificate was a series of written tests for the theoretical element.

A practical assessment led to the award of Achievement Measurement 1 and assessed safe use of tools and basic fabrication techniques.

The second year of my apprenticeship was structured in the same way as the first and led to the award of the City and Guilds 236 Part 2 Certificate in Electrical Installation Competences.

The third and fourth years of my apprenticeship were structured in a day release format, that is to mean, I attended college for one day each week. This resulted in being awarded the City and Guilds 236 Course C Certificate in Electrical Installation, and after a thorough practical assessment over two days, the

Achievement Measurement 2. The course C certificate is an advanced craft

certificate and is not required in order to complete an apprenticeship.

The completion of the Achievement Measurement 2 marked the end of my training and being graded as a fully qualified electrician by Joint Industry Board.

It will be seen on my completion diploma and letter from the JIB that my apprenticeship was not formally completed until April 2010.

Whilst collating documents in preparation for an application for an ARTC, it became apparent that I was not in possession of a completion diploma.

When I applied for a copy of one from the JIB they stated to me that my apprenticeship was not formally completed in 1993 due to an administrative oversight and was immediately rectified.

My training taught me how to:

  • Read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, circuit charts etc
  • Determine and select appropriate materials required. Correct size and type of cables and relevant circuit breaker, for example
  • Measure, fabricate and install cable management systems such as tray, metal and PVC trunking, metal and PVC conduit, ladder rack
  • Install cables such as PVC, steel wire armoured, mineral insulated and various other types of sheathed cables.
  • Install and connect single and three phase electrical apparatus such as lighting points, power points, switchgear, motors, transformers, contactors, circuit breakers, residual current devices, distribution boards, control panels etc
  • Diagnose faults and repair electrical equipment using safe isolation procedures
  • Test, inspect and certify electrical installations
  • Carry out works in a safe and efficient manner, and with adherence to BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations
  • Select and use safely the following types of tools, plant and equipment; screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers, measuring tape, squares, spirit level, saws, files, hammers, spanners, knives, socket sets, soldering iron, crimping tools, threading tools, conduit bending machine and vice, drills, jigsaw, chop saw, angle grinder, continuity tester, ohmmeter, insulation resistance tester, earth loop impedance tester, earth electrode resistance tester, RCD tester, ladders, scaffold towers.

I have endeavoured to supply as much documentary evidence as possible in light of the absence of a detailed statement from London Borough of Southwark.

This includes copies of trade certificates awarded by City and Guilds, a personal training plan, a college report from South Thames College, past and current JIB grade cards which state ‘completed apprenticeship” on the reverse, a Completion Diploma awarded by the JIB, and a letter from the JIB confirming my status as an apprenticeship trained Electrician.
