October 2 - 6, 2017

Information went home about the Hayes Cooper Color Run. Children MUST preregister by October 11th in order to receive a t-shirt. Last year, several showed up the day of - which is wonderful, but your child will NOT receive a t-shirt unless he/she is preregistered. Please do this and enjoy the Color Run!!

This site will be updated weekly. You can also join Remind 101. The Remind 101 will be texted out when there is achange of schedule or an important event coming up. I will not send out daily homework reminders. Homework for each class will be written on the board. All students need to write this down each day.

New information on the Friday Dress Policy went home in Tuesday's papers. Basically - on Fridays, your child can wear regular uniform clothes or jeans and an HCC shirt. If your child wants to wear his/her favorite jersey or cheerleading uniform, he/she can on Friday by paying $1.00.

Reading - This week, we will continuereading our first chapter book. The title isManiac Mageeby Jerry Spinelli. Our focus skills will be comparing and contrasting. We will also discuss character traits.We will be working on these skills throughout the week. We will readchapters 33 - 39this week. The chapters are very short. Your child has his/her own book that can be brought home.

Your child will begivena new vocabulary workshop story with definitions, synonyms and antonyms on Tuesday, October 3rd. We will review the vocabulary including definitions, synonyms and antonyms every day. This week, we will have synonyms/antonyms on Thursday, October 5th for a g1 grade. Next week, we will have complete the sentence activity on Tuesday, October 12thfor a g1 grade and on Friday, October 13th, we will have a G2 test on these words.
We will be using Moby Max again this year. We will work on all three reading areas - reading informational, reading stories, and reading skills. We will also work on the languageportion of Moby Max. Your child can practice all skills at home on this site.

STAR test/AR - Information on where your child is in regards to AR tests went home with progress reports. Your child should be at LEAST at 50% in regards to his/her goal and should always be at 85% or above for comprehension. Please encourage your child to read. The AR grades - comprehension and goal percentage - will be recorded Tuesday, October 10th. Your child has until Monday, October9th to read his/her goal.

I always read a book aloud to them each nine weeks. I just finished readingCrashby Jerry Spinelli to the class. All children were able to take an AR test on this book.

English -This week, we willcontinue in chapter 5. We are learning about pronouns. We will have a checkup quiz on Wednesday for a g1 grade and on Friday, October 6th, we will have a G2 test on the skills from chapter 5. I have given every child back his/her revised descriptive paper. Please make sure your child works on this paper. Writing is a life skill. Some of the children are just rushing through this work and putting down the bare minimum. The paragraph should contain a lot of descriptive words, at least one example of figurative language and transition words or phrases. I've discussed all of this with them. The final paper is due on Tuesday, October 3rd. This is for a G2 grade.

Spelling - Our spelling words for this week are: wildlife, uproar, home run headache top-secret, teammate, wheelchair, light bulb, well-known, throughout, life preserver, barefoot, part-time, warehouse, overboard, post office, outspoken, up-to-date, awestruck newscast, motorcycle, overseas, quick-witted, stomachache, and bulletin board. These words are all compound words. Compound words can be spelled as one word, a hyphenated word, or separate words.
The spelling assignments for the week are: Monday- 3 x each, Tuesday- spelling worksheet,Wednesday- spelling 10 sentences. Each sentence MUST have a minimum of seven words. On Thursday, October 5th, we will have a regular spelling test. We will NOT have a dictation test this week due to DARE meeting on Friday, October 6th.
