(1) In one way of thinking , failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success.
The “spite story”is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots (苏格兰人)in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English .He watched a spider(蜘蛛) spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times to span the gap. On the seventh time he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English….. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top form yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?
Second , is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about want your real goals may be. Think about this question. “if I do succeed in this , where will it get me ?”This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.
The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life .Learn to “live with yourself”even though you may have failed .Remember , “You can’twin them all.”

(2)As a medium of exchange, money permits the separation of exchange into the two distinct acts of buying and selling. Without requiring the seller to purchase goods from the person who buys his products, or vice versa. Hence producers who know they will be paid in money, can concentrate on finding the most suitable outlet for their goods, while buyers who will pay in money, can concentrate on finding cheapest market for the things they wish to purchase. Specialization, which is vital to an advanced economy, is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one in which many others are involved can be paid an amount equivalent to their share of the product.

Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of value--- that is, it serves as a unit in terms of which the relative values of different products can be expressed. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal. Which would be a difficult and time-consuming task. The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties’ desires and preferences. If I am trying to barter fish for bananas, for example, a lot would depend on whether the person is willing to exchange bananas or is not keen on fish.

Thirdly, money acts as a store of wealth. It is difficult to imagine saving under a barter system. No one engaged on only one stage in the manufacture of a product could save part of his output, since he would be producing nothing complete. Even when a person actually produced a complete product the difficulties would be overwhelming. Most products deteriorate fairly rapidly, either physically or in value, a result of long storage; even if storage were possible, the practice of storing products for years on would involve obvious disadvantage--- imagine a coal-miner attempting to save enough coal, which of course is his product, to keep him for life. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided for, or capital accumulated to raise productivity.

6 Using money as a medium of exchange means that______.

A you have to sell something in order to buy something

B you have to buy something in order to sell something

C you don’t have to buy something in order to sell something

D the seller and the purchaser are the same person

7 Specialization is encouraged because______.

A people can use their money to buy whatever they want

B people do not need to make a complete product for exchange

C people make a great contribution to manufacture of a product

D people cannot use their money to buy whatever they want

8 A barter economy is one in which ______.

A value is decided by weight

B value is decided by number

C money is used and foods are not exchanged

D goods are exchanged and money is not used

9 If one had to save products instead of money, ______.

A this would need years of practice

B coal, for example, would lose its value

C they could not be stored for years on end

D many products would lose their value

10 how many advantages of money are mentioned in this passages?

A Two B Three C Four D Five

(3) Slavery may have ended in most places but not in the world of ants. Scientists say several different kinds of ants depend on slaves to do their work. Some have become so dependent that they could not survive without their slaves. A report by America’s national Geographic Society told about the work of researcher Hoare Toppov. He spent several summers studying an ant nation in a mountain desert in the southwestern state of Arizona. The scientist found that a nation of red ants in the Arizona desert might have about 3000 members. It would have about 6000 slaves. These slave ants search for food. They feed the babies and the leaders. They defend the ant nation against attacks by other insects. And if the ant nation moves, the slaves carry the master ants one by one to the new home.

Most of the world’s 12000 kinds or species of ants do not have slaves. But about 1000 species do. The scientists said they found that the red ants in Arizona capture their slaves during raids on other ant nations. The master ants send out scouts or searchers that look for a possible target under a rock that stands near a small plant. A successful scout returns home quickly with the news. Soon a raiding group of 2000 excited ants forms for the attack. They march in formation, an army of advancing ants, about one meter wide and five meters long. There is very little killing in the attack. The raiding ants spray a chemical that causes the older ants in the target area to flee. The attackers then seize the younger ants that were left unprotected.

Researchers say they found about 2000 babies may be seized on one raid. Sometimes the raiders return for a second attack. In one year a nation of master ants may steal 20000 or 30000 baby ants. More than one half of the babies are eaten, the others are trained as slaves.

Scientists said they found some ants have slaves to do their work but masters also still are able to do their work. However, researchers found a few other ants that no longer can do nothing for themselves. They must depend on their slaves for a survival.

(4) As the pace of life continues to increase , we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation(动力)and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “flight or flight”and in more primitive days the choices made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response, It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart diseases have established links with stress.Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find sways to deal with it.

16.People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because_____.

C. they are traveling fast all the time
D. they are becoming busier.

A. We can find some ways to avoid stress.
B. Stress is always harmful to people
C. It is easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work
D. Different people can withstand different amount of stress.
