Humanitarians Through History Research Paper

CA ELA Standard: Writing Applications 2.4—Write historical investigation reports.

CA Government Standard: 12.3.1—Explain how civil society provides opportunities for individuals for associate for social, cultural, religious, economic, and political purposes.

ASSIGNMENT—A humanitarian is a person who promotes human welfare and social reform. You will write a research paper on an influential individual from history; in the paper, you will demonstrate that this person was a humanitarian who has positively influenced society and your life. You will format your paper based on the outline below. You must use at least 3 different types of sources (Internet, newspaper, book, etc.), use parenthetical documentation, and include a works cited page. Your paper must be a minimum of 3 full pages plus a works cited page, and be double-spaced, #12 font, Times New Roman, with an MLA heading and standard MLA format. Your rough draft must include a printout of the information you are citing in this paper.

Paragraph 1—In your introductory paragraph, you will give personal background of the individual and what he/she did to change the world. Remember to use a hook to get the reader interested.

Paragraph 2—You must clearly explain the problem/need that the individual has actively advocated for.

Paragraph 3—You must clearly explain what actions the individual has taken to better the world.

Paragraph 4—Explain what obstacles your individual has had to overcome to be successful.

Paragraph 5—How has the individual inspired/affected you personally.

Paragraph 6—Concluding paragraph.

Rubric

An A (90-100) paper includes the following:

-an MLA heading

-a minimum of 2 ½ typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, #12 font pages

-a correctly formatted works cited page

-correctly formatted parenthetical documentation

-a minimum of 3 different types of sources

-all sources in the works cited are cited in the paper and vice versa

-biographical information about the individual, the need the individual has advocated for, the actions the individual has taken to better the world, the obstacles the individual has faced, how the individual inspires/affects you, concluding paragraph.

-has mature, cohesive writing

-is free of spelling, grammar, usage errors

-a hook in the introductory paragraph

A B (80-89) paper includes most of the criteria or all of the criteria but to a lesser degree.

A C (70-79) paper includes many of the criteria as above but to a lesser degree or contains many errors.

A D (60-69) paper includes some of the criteria as above and/or contains many errors.

An F (0-59) paper includes few of the criteria as above and/or will be missing the works cited page and/or parenthetical documentation.
