Human Anatomy and Physiology Syllabus

Guy Smith

Hernando High School

Human anatomy and physiology focuses on the structure, function and organization of the human body. This class is especially valuable in preparing students who wish to study medicine, pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy, and other medical and health related fields. As a former paramedic, I will also be teaching your student a few basic life saving skills such as:

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)

Basic splinting

Blood Pressure analysis

The Heimlich maneuver

Basic vital sign(s) analysis

Basic hemorrhage control

Instructional Philosophy:

Students will study and learn about the different body systems through lecture, classroom discussion, labs, case studies, and reading. The students will be assigned reports, projects and case studies that will require an understanding of human anatomy and physiology. Students will participate byconducting research and sharing their understanding of human body with other class members. The students will also participate in laboratory exercises and other activities. Students are expected to maintain a notebook that includes lecture notes, class discussion and laboratory activities.

Course Standards:

  • - Students will explain how cell structure and function relate to organ and tissue structure and function.
  • - Students will use the principles learned in human anatomy and physiology to solve case studies.
  • - Students will explore and understand how the body functions. As a result they will understand how diseases and other conditions affect the body.
  • - Students will participate in projects that call upon the application of their knowledge of the human body.

Lab Fees:

There will be a $5 fee associated with this course. The fee goes towards dissection/Lab needs. We will discuss this fee later in the coming weeks.

Major Assignments and Projects:

  1. Students will complete homework assignments.
  2. Students will be assessed with quizzes, chapter tests, case study problems,

Worksheets, labs and written reports.

Assessment and grading plan:

The grading scale used by the school is applied. Final grade is based on total points accumulated against the total points available to earn. Final grade is based on reports, projects, labs, quizzes, and tests.

For parent/guardian(s):

Due to the nature of this course we will be discussing material that could be considered controversial. We will be discussing diseases (both sexual and non-sexual) and we will be discussing human reproduction and childbirth. If this could be a problem I will give your student an alternate assignment to be completed outside of the classroom
