How to use “Snipping Tool” in Windows

To communicate the technical issue that you’re encountering in DSCIS, users may include a screen shot to provide additional details to the technical support team.Using the built-in “Snipping Tool” application on your Windows computer is one way to help you do this.

Overview

Snipping Tool can be used to capture a screen shot, or snip, of any object on the screen. Once you have “snipped” you can annotate, save or copy and paste the captured image.

Step-by-Step Process

1.Open Snipping Tool

Click on the start button on the bottom left of your screen. If the Snipping Tool is listed, click on the Snipping Tool Icon. Where the Snipping Tool application is not listed, you can locate using the following steps:

For Windows10 / TypeSnipping Toolin the search box on the taskbar, and then selectSnipping Tool.
For Windows8.1 / Windows RT 8.1 / Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tapSearch(or if you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then clickSearch), enterSnipping Toolin the search box, and then tap or clickSnipping Tool.
For Windows7 / Click theStartbutton. In the search box, typeSnipping Tool, and then, in the list of results, clickSnipping Tool.

Note:Once you have found the Snipping Tool, right-click on the Snipping Tool Icon in the start menu to pin it to the start menu or task bar to ensure it is readily available to you and you do not need to search for it every time you would like to use the snipping tool.

2.Capturing a Snip

  • Click the arrow next to the New button, select Free-form Snip, Rectangular Snip, Window Snip, or Full-screen Snip from the list, and then select the area of your screen that you want to capture.
  • Description of the types of snips:
  • Free-form Snip.Draw a free-form shape around an object.
  • Rectangular Snip.Drag the cursor around an object to form a rectangle.
  • Window Snip.Select a window, such as a browser window or dialog box that you want to capture.
  • Full-screen Snip.Capture the entire screen.

After you capture a snip, it is automatically copied to the Clipboard and the mark-up window. From the mark-up window, you can annotate, save, or copy and paste the snip.

3.Annotating a Snip

  • Once you capture a snip, you can write and draw on or around the snip in the mark-up window by using the pen or highlighter icons in the toolbar at the top of the window.
  • Use a dark colour to hide the personal information or light colour to highlight the information. You can select the arrow beside the pen to change the colour of the pen.

4.Copying a Snip

  • After annotating a snip, if you do not need to save it, select the copy button to copy your annotated version to the clipboard. Alternatively, you can select ctrl+c to copy or select “Edit” and then “Copy”.

  1. Pasting a Snip
  • Once it has been copied, you can paste this snip into your Ticket Request Formor document by using ctrl+v or right clicking and selecting Paste/Paste options.
  1. Saving a Snip
  • After you capture a snip, if you would like to save it, click the Save Snip button in the mark-up window.
  • In the Save As dialog box, enter a name for the snip, choose a location where to save the snip, and then click Save.
