Main duties:

Answering the main telephone line, fielding calls and taking messages where appropriate and checking emails.

Nuffield Research Placement Scheme – approx. 3 days per week

SETPOINT runs this scheme in two regions on behalf of the Nuffield Foundation: Herts, Beds, Berks, Bucks & Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. For details see:

This involves monitoring the Nuffield applicants’ website, keeping accurate and up-to-date records (in line with Data Protection), emailing students, teachers, and project supervisors as necessary and organising three Induction events for students in June and three Celebration events to be held in October/November.

Big Bang Fair Eastern– approx. 2 days per week

SETPOINT runs a series of STEM Fairs throughout the East of England in partnership with EngineeringUK. Schools and colleges can run their own events in-house, and our main event of the year is The Big Bang Fair Eastern, the regional event, which will be held on the 5th July at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield (College Lane). The successful applicant will help to find and recruit exhibitors to attend the event to showcase lots of different kinds of STEM activity; keep records of which companies and organisations are coming, ensuring we have the relevant Risk Assessments etc, as well as helping to co-ordinate the many aspects of this exciting and inspirational event.

Attendance at the events will be necessary and will involve travel to other parts of the East of England. Very occasionally, an overnight stay in a hotel will be required (and paid for by SETPOINT).

Other duties will include helping the team with their work/projects, especially when there are tight deadlines; eg during British Science Week in March, getting involved in SETPOINT workshops occasionally, attending and helping at eventsand dropping off/picking up resources from our storage facility in Stevenage.

Person Specification

As a member of our small administrative team, the candidate will help with the smooth running of the SETPOINT office, including dealing with telephone, email and postal correspondence, general administrative tasks, working with web-based databases etc. The successful candidate will be helping to organise and sometimes attend school workshops and other educational events and must be prepared to drive to locations around Hertfordshire (and sometimes further afield) occasionally as part of their role.

This is an extremely varied and interesting role, which offers the opportunity for someone to extend their knowledge and experience in a not-for-profit organisation, helping to organise events and utilising their communication skills. It is ideally suited to someone who has an interest in STEM.

Key Skills and Attributes

  • Previous experience of working in an administrative role
  • Successful applicant will be highly organised, and have some experience of arranging events/meetings
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise
  • Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office and using the internet
  • Full UK driving licence and access to private transport (own car) * Please note: This is an essential requirement of the role
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Reliable, trustworthy, self-motivated and hard-working
  • Flexibility to cover a wide variety of tasks
