Reading

This year your child will learn different strategies to increase their reading fluency. Your child will work to build critical thinking and comprehension skills. Author studies and reading different genres of literature will help deepen their understanding of literature. In our classroom we will learn:

* Ways to decode words

* How to identify and explain different genres of literature

* How to make inferences while reading

* How to predict what will happen next in the story

* How to compare and contrast the similarities and differences in characters

* How to make connections to things they are familiar with while reading

* How to draw conclusions about characters in a story

* How to use context clues to define vocabulary words in a story

You can help your childat home by asking your child different questions about what they read. Frequent visits to the public library or bookstore will help them develop a passion for reading. You will receive more specific information at our Curriculum Night regarding reading questions to use with your child.

Writing

This year your child will continue to expand their writing using proper nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. Your child will continue to work on writing complete sentences with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. We will focus on writing personal narratives, imaginative narratives, poetry, and informational paragraphs. In our classroom we will learn:

* How to identify and write strong beginnings and endings

* How to add elaborative details to a story

* How to extend sentences using proper nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs

* How to use correct punctuation and capitalization

* How to spell words correctly

* How to brainstorm ideas for writing a story

* How create a story plan

* How to use the writing process to publish meaningful stories

You can help your child to build their writing skills by having your child write letters to their family members or by allowing your child write in a journal about their day or week.

Science

In science your child will learn about different animal life cycles,states of matter, different types of weather, and sound through projects, experiments, and field trips. In the classroom we will learn:

* How to identify and describe different animal life cycles

* How to identify and explain the different characteristics of the states of matter

* How to graph different types of weather

* How to define sound

Social Studies

In Social Studies your child will discover characteristics about different neighborhoods and communities. Your child will learn about citizenship, rules, and our government. They will also learn how to read and create maps and compare the likenesses and differences of people in different communities. In the classroom we will learn:

* How to create and read different types of maps

* How to identify and use cardinal directions

* How to identify characteristics of rural, suburban, and city communities

* How to identify and compare and contrast characteristics of different culture
