DESCRIPTION: Bishop Alemany High School Academic Decathlon Team Inspired by Excellence

The Bishop Alemany High School Academic Decathlon team competed in the Division II State Championships held in Sacramento this month. The 2014-2015 topic for the competition was New Alternatives in Energy: Ingenuity and Innovation. There are an estimated 500 high schools, and 13,000 students who participate annually in Academic Decathlon in California. The makeup of each of the nine member teams must include three Honors members, three Scholastic members, and three Varsity level members. Academic Decathletes take 30 minute multiple choice tests in the subjects of Art, Economics, Music, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. In addition, each team member gives a planned 4 minute speech and a 2 minute impromptu speech, participates in a 7 minute interview, and has 50 minutes to write an expository essay. The Super Quiz Relay, the final event, is open to the public and features questions from subject matters including Art, Economics, Music, Language and Literature, Science, and Social Science.

Bishop Alemany Warrior Carter Randolf received the Gold medal for the highest overall student in Scholastic and the Gold in the individual for Art, and a Gold medal in Music. Warrior Mitchell Riek received the Scholastic Silver medal in Economics. Senior David Bambrick received the Gold medal in the Honors Essay competition, a Silver medal for Honors Literature and a Bronze medal for Honors Music. In Science, David Bambrick won the Gold medal in the Honors division, Carter Randolf won a Gold medal in the Scholastic Division and Mitchell Riek the Silver Medal in the Scholastic Division. Carter won the Gold medal in the Scholastic Division of Social Science and Mitchell won the Silver medal. Chaeli Reyes won the Gold medal in the Varsity Division for Speech. While competing at the Academic Decathlon, Senior David Bambrick received good news that he had been accepted at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Congratulations to Coaches Sharon Veenhof, Michael Taylor and Ryan Songco and the Bishop Alemany Academic Decathlon team.
