How to Attach Tatting to Garments

While tatting is very beautiful, it is deceptively sturdy and can be attached to garments in a variety of ways. Listed below are a few methods:

Hemstitched handkerchiefs-

Tatting may be attached directly onto the hanky by joining picots to the hemstitched spaces.

Whip stitching-

After tatting a nice edging or motif, carefully whipstitch it to a hanky or garment of choice with a matching or invisible thread. The tatting should be attached through the “body” of the tatting; in other words, through the double stitches. If the tatting has many picots, use invisible thread to tack a few of them in place to help maintain the uniformity of the design.

Direct tatting-

Tatting may also be attached directly to a garment using the same manner as when joining to a hemstitched hanky. If needle tatting, the work can be attached along the way as it is formed. Simply run the needle through the fabric of the garment.

Securing jewelry findings, beads, and cabochons to tatting-

After reaching the point in a project where adhering findings, beads, or stones is called for, use a quality jeweler’s cement. There are many on the market and as far as it has been my experience, the use of these cements has not adversely affected the tatting. Careful application is the key! I use a toothpick or plastic applicator to apply the cement ONLY where it is needed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions in regard to drying time.

Please note that when working with cabochons, the backside may need to be “roughed” with a bit of sandpaper for it to properly adhere. Some stones are oiled to preserve their luster and stability. The oil can sometimes prevent the cement from setting.

Words of caution-

I personally do not like to use fusible web with tatting as it is “stringy” and does not always adhere uniformly as is needed. Fabric glue may be used to tack a piece in place when laying out work, but should not be solely relied upon to secure the tatting.

Remember to take precautions when laundering garments enhanced with tatting. Turn the garments inside out before washing. You may dry the garment according to its instructions, but remember to remove the garment from the dryer BEFORE it is completely dry. Turn right side out and gently smooth the tatting. If needed, iron the garment and tatting.
