Hospice Foundation Geelong announces the Trevor Banks Scholarship for Palliative Care
Hospice Foundation Geelong, in conjunction with Western Victoria PHN, is pleased to announce the inaugural Trevor Banks Scholarship for Palliative Care.
This scholarshipis named in honour of local GP, Dr Trevor Banks, OAM, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to palliative care. Trevor was instrumental in establishing a formal palliative care service in the Geelong region since the 1970s.
The Scholarship is an annual award of up to $5000 to assist a General Practitioner working in the Geelong region to upskill in the area of palliative care. The scholarship may be used to attend a national or international educational event relating to palliative care, which may include:
Suggested educational events in 2018 may include:
- Australia and New Zealand Society for Palliative Medicine Biennial Conference (date TBA)
- European Association for Palliative Care Research Congress: Bern, Switzerland – May 2018
- International Congress on palliative Care, Montreal, Canada – October 2018
- St Christopher’s Hospice, London, Multi-Professional week – September 2018 (TBC)
- MASCC Conference, Vienna, Austria – June 2018
- Applicants may propose other relevant events for consideration
Eligibility:
The recipient will be a General Practitioner or GP Registrar working in the Geelong region (includes Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast) preferablywith a long-term commitment to continue to work in the region.
Current practice should include provision of care to people with palliative care needs.
Application process:
Applications in writing (electronic or hard copy) must include:
- A current Curriculum Vitae including qualifications and current practice location.
- Details of previous palliative care experience and current practice in the field
(i.e. approximate annual number of palliative care patients, availability for home visits to palliative care patients and Residential Aged Care Facilities, attendance at Western Victoria PHN events) - Preferred educational event to attend (may be subject to change)
- Anticipated benefit for GP and patients as a result of attending educational event
- Anticipated expenses – registration fees, travel costs, accommodation, meals etc.

Follow up activities:
After attending the event, the recipient agrees to:
- Provide Hospice Foundation Geelong and Western Victoria PHN a brief report of the educational event and major learning points.
- Attend the Hospice Foundation Geelong Annual General Meeting (October 2018) to deliver a brief presentation of learnings to the Board of Directors.
- Attend the annual Western Victoria PHN GP Palliative Care Forum (October 2018) to deliver a brief presentation of learnings.
- Provide Hospice Foundation Geelong with confirmation of expenses and receipts where available, for accounting purposes.
