Job Title: Sales Assistant

Reporting to: Shop Manager or Assistant Manager

General Description of Post

To support the work of Hope House Children’s Hospices and help provide excellent customer service to enhance the profile of the organisation. To occasionally step in to manage the shop in the absence of the manager and assistant manager so that the shop can remain open for the maximum trading hours, thus improving income.

Key Responsibilities

  1. To ensure all aspects of good customer service are followed by all those working in the shop and provide guidance as required.
  1. To assist in the moving and preparation of stock to ensure that goods are effectively and attractively displayed. To maintain high standards of cleanliness and professionalism throughout the shop.
  1. To ensure stock levels in the shop are maintained.
  1. To actively encourage donors to take up the Gift Aid option in order to maximise revenue.
  1. To work alongside a team of volunteers and develop a good working relationship with them.
  1. To foster a culture that ensures volunteers feel supported and valued for the contribution they make.
  1. To assist the managers with collating a volunteer rota to provide appropriate levels of cover in the shop.
  1. To act as the appointed person during emergency situations that cannot wait for the return of the managers. This would include, but would not be limited to, recording accidents, incidents and near misses and taking all appropriate action required at the time.
  1. To work within the boundaries of organisational policies and systems, including the Cybertill EPOS system.
  1. To observe all cash handling and recording procedures, daily banking, weekly postings and other recording which may be required during the managers absence.
  1. To ensure all Health & Safety procedures are followed by all volunteers and members of the public.
  1. To ensure that all information is passed to the shop managers either in person or in writing to ensure continuity and continued good management of the shop.
  1. To undertake health & safety training and any other training deemed necessary to effectively carry out the role.
  1. To act as keyholder of the building when required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION – SALES ASSISTANT

Essential / Desirable
Experience /
  • Retail experience with a proven track record of success (in a paid or voluntary capacity)

  • Charity retail experience

Skills /
  • Self motivated using initiative to achieve goals
  • Able to work in a team with the ability to get on with people from all walks of life
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Well organised and willing to ‘muck in’ and do whatever is required to ensure the shop functions efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Numerate with ability to follow cash handling, recording and banking procedures

  • Ability to motivate volunteers to achieve optimum results
  • Demonstrable flair and creativity in maximising the shop’s potential
  • Ability and confidence to communicate new ideas and implement them
  • IT literacy

Knowledge/ Understanding /
