Honors U.S. History and Geography II Syllabus Mrs. Povlacs

Course Description:

This course continues the study of American History that began in Grade 10 through the economic, geographic, social, and political development of the United States. Beginning with the post-Reconstruction United States and its shift into a more industrialized society, the course continues through the 20th century to the present. Students are involved in a chronological study of major events, issues, movements, and leaders of the U.S. through the present from both a national and an AL perspective. With more fully developed skills in abstract thinking, students compare, analyze, and explain events and developments rather than simply list or identify them.

Because this is an Honors course, you are expected to read the chapter on your own time and prior to class. You will be required to participate in class discussions, answer questions that relate to the material and class activities and complete more in-depth writing assignments (essays, DBQ’s). In addition, with the introduction of 1:1 student laptops, I will begin to place class lectures on the school website and additional hosting sites for students to view. This will open up valuable class time for collaboration, student group work, review and projects that can be researched and completed in class. I will share more about this during Week 1 of our schedule.

Grading Scale:

30% Quizzes/Homework/Writing: No late work accepted!

A grade will be given based on the student’s participation, completion of assignments, behavior and cooperation. This category will also consist of quizzes and writing assignments. There will be roughly 15 assignments spaced throughout the semester. Students will also be expected to complete missed assignments on their own time. A tentative homework schedule is listed below.

50% Tests

This will consist of individual or combined chapter tests and student projects. Pop tests will not be given. Be aware of the make-up policy (school and obtaining class assignments.)

20% Exams:

The mid-term and final exams will count as 20% of the student’s final grade as required by the school system.

*Make-Up Day* *Wednesday* *AM 7:15-7:40* *PM 3:05-3:45* NO LATE ARRIVALS!
