Course Philosophy

Tenth grade English Language Arts (ELA) focuses on the five strands of literacy: reading, writing, viewing, listening, and speaking. Honors ELA10 is specifically designed to prepare students to succeed in AP Language and Literature courses or in the IB English Program. This course will emphasize the skills needed for collegiate level courses.

Grading and Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on the following:

·  Writing assignments and essays

·  Projects

·  Tests/ Benchmarks

·  Class Discussions

·  Group work

·  Daily class work

·  Quizzes

·  Oral Presentations

·  Auditory Assessments

·  Homework

·  End-of Course Assessment

This class will follow the grading scale adopted by the St. Joseph School Board. Semester grades will be term weighted.

Late Work Policy

If a student would like to turn in late work an appointment MUST be made for tutoring before or after school. Once the tutoring session has been completed, the work will be accepted for a full credit 1st Quarter, 85% of points earned 2nd Quarter, 75% of points earned 3rd Quarter, and 50% of points earned 4th Quarter.

Absence from Class and Make-Up Work Policy

Make-up work for an excused absence is not the same as late work. Please see the student agenda for policies on absences. All make-up work needs to be labeled with ABSENT at the top of the assignment.

Cheating and Plagiarism

Copying another student’s work is cheating. Plagiarism is also a form of cheating. Students who submit another’s work as their own will be penalized depending on the severity of the event. Consequences for cheating may include loss of credit for the assignment, a conference with the vice-principal, a conference with parents/guardians, or even suspension.
