WHISL FINAL: Speeches

Honor Code Level Three

Purposes:

The purposes of this assignment are to expose you to a new idea related to our current Revolution unit, strengthen your research skills as you connect that idea to essential questions we’ve examined this semester, and construct an argument (using ethos, logos, and pathos) that you will deliver in a persuasive speech to the class.

Essential Questions to consider for this assignment:

It is recommended that you focus on only ONE essential question with regard to your chosen topic.

  • What are the responsibilities of government?
  • When is rebellion against authority justified?
  • What is a successful revolution?
  • What is justice?

Tasks:

Select a topic that you can connect to one of the essential questions.

Formulate a more specific research question to examine, utilizing the ideas in one of the above essential questions. (Example: Were the socialists justified in their rebellion against Czar Nicholas II and the Russian monarchy?)

Create a thesis related to one of the essential questions (above).(Example: It is undeniable that the Russian socialists, both Mensheviks and Bolsheviks, were justified in their revolt against Czar Nicholas II due to his appalling decisions regarding finance and World War One.)

Conduct research and select at least five sources, two of whichmust be primary sources.

Write an annotated bibliography analyze your sources. This will be submitted earlier than the speech itself so that you can use it to create an outline for your speech.

Construct an argument in a persuasive speech, 5-7 minutes long, to convince your audience of your thesis utilizing ethos, pathos, and logos.

Deliver your speech to the class.

Submit your speech (typed, double-spaced, in 12-point, Times New Roman font) along with a Works Cited page. Everything must be submitted at once.

Grading

Annotated Bibliography- one four-point grade

Outline- classwork/homework grade; may only be submitted late if you have an excused absence

Speech draft- classwork/homework grade; may only be submitted late if you have an excused absence

Final speech & Works Cited page- six four-point grades

Mon., 5/16 / DUE: Source 1 & 2 in MLA formats along with handwritten notes for each source.
Lesson on how to write an Annotated Bibliography.
Wed., 5/18 / Research day; computer lab.
Fri., 5/20 / Research day; computer lab.
Mon., 5/23 / Annotated Bibliography due (at least five sources).
