The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Hong Kong Aviation Scholarship Scheme (“Scheme”)

Scholarship Policy & Eligibility

(to be awarded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (“Government”)

under the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund)

  1. Objective

To encourage continuous professional enhancement for the aviation sector in Hong Kong.

  1. Amount of Scholarship

Capped at HK$100,000 for each award.

  1. Eligibility and Conditions

To be eligible for the scholarship (“Scholarship”), applicants must satisfy all of the following conditions:

(a)The applicant must be a full-time* student newly enrolled in one of the following programmes offered by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (“PolyU”) in the academic year 2016/17: -

(i)Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Aeronautical Engineering); or

(ii)Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Aviation); or

(iii)Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Air Transport Engineering.

(collectively referred to as “relevant Programmes”)

*The recipient must maintain a full-time student status throughout the study of the above-mentioned programmes.

(b)Applicants must have either right of abode, right to land or have entered Hong Kong on one-way permits. Students entering on Student or Dependent Visa are not eligible under the Scheme.

(c)Applicants must attain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above throughout the study of one of the relevant Programmes.

(d)Applicants must attain a final Award GPA of 3.2 or above at the time of graduation from one of the relevant Programmes.

(e)Applicants must be employed full-time in the aviation industry in Hong Kong for a period of not less than twelve consecutive calendar months, within three calendar months upon successful completion of one of the relevant Programmes.

(f)Applicants must successfully complete one of the relevant Programmes as specified in sub-clause (a) above.

(g)Applicants must comply with the university policies/regulations.

Note: Each applicant will be required to sign an undertaking with the Government to the effect that he/she understands the terms and conditions of this Scholarship Policy & Eligibility and shall abide by the terms and conditions therein. In case the successful applicant fails to fulfill or meet any one of the eligibility requirements stipulated in Clause 3 hereof, the Scholarship Policy & Eligibility will be terminated immediately. In the event of the Scholarship Policy and Eligibility being terminated, the successful applicant shall be required to refund to the Government the full amount of scholarship received (including any amount received in the previous semester(s)).

  1. Selection Criteria

(a)Selection will be based on qualities (including the applicant’s academic background, work experience and/or performance in the admission process). Preference will be given to applicants who have work experiences in the aviation industry, or have great potential in the career development in the aviation sector in Hong Kong.

(b)Shortlisted applicants may be invited to attend an interview conducted by the selection panel under the Scheme.

  1. Source and use of scholarship

The Scheme operates under the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (“MATF”) approved by the Government. MATF aims to encourage continuous enhancement and support manpower development for the maritime and aviation sectors.

  1. Administration

The Scholarship is administered byThe Department of Mechanical Engineering, PolyU.PolyU will assess from time to time whether or notthe applicant meets the Eligibility and Conditionsas stipulated in Clause 3 hereof.PolyU and/or the Government reserves the right to amend the terms or withdraw the Scholarship at its sole discretion. In case of any dispute and/or disagreement, any decision made by PolyU and/or the Government is final and binding.

  1. Application Procedures

(a)The applicant is required to complete (i) an application form (including supplying of academic results for previous studies and other supporting documents as required) and (ii) theDeed of Undertaking.

(b)Applicants must submit the duly completeddocuments to The Department of Mechanical Engineering, PolyU by email to 12:00 noon, 31 October 2016 (Monday). Late or incomplete application will not be considered.

  1. Personal Data

(a)PolyU will use the personal data provided in the applications for the purposes of (a) activities relating to the processing and counter-checking of an application under the Scheme including but not limited to verification procedures; (b) activities relating to the recovery of payments, if any; (c) statistics and research; and (d) for service improvement, publicity or publication (if awarded the Scholarship).

(b)The personal data and other supplementary information that are provided in the application may be disclosed to PolyU, the Transport and Housing Bureau (“THB”), Government policy bureaux and departments and other authorities for the purposes mentioned in sub-clause (a) above or where such disclosure is authorised and required by law.

(c)If necessary, PolyU and/or THB will contact the authorities, other government departments and organisations to verify the data provided in the application with those held by them for the purposes mentioned in sub-clause (a) above.

(d)The personal data and information provided by applicants will be kept for a period of no more than four years under normal circumstances, or within one year upon my graduation/departure from PolyU.

(e)In accordance with sections 18 and 22 and Principle 6 of Schedule 1 of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Chapter 486 of the Laws of Hong Kong), applicants have the right to request access to and correction of the personal data supplied in their applications.

(f)Enquiries concerning the personal data provided in the applications and requests for the correction of such data may be made in writing to the Academic Secretariat Service Centre at M101, PolyU. A handling fee will be charged.
