Academic words!

These are some of the words that you are going to be seeing LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of this year. These are words that are not only on tests (and they ARE on tests) but they are words that you will hear in high school and in college. These are words that will elevate your thinking and questioning!

Below you will find the vocabulary words for the week with context sentences to help you understand what they mean. Use the Context sentences to match each word with the correct definition in the chart.

1. Clarify: I didn’t understand the question so I asked the teacher to clarify it, and then it made sense.

2. Compile: I had to write a report about World War II so I decided to compile all of my notes in one place.

3. Debate: I watched the two presidential candidates debate the issues that they disagreed on so that I could decide whom to vote for.

4. Demonstrate: In order to pass my driver’s test I had to demonstrate my ability to drive safely.

5. Illustrate: When my friend didn’t understand my plan, I drew a picture to illustrate what I meant.

6. Immigrate: My great grandfather immigrated to America from Germany to provide a better life for his family.

7. Justify: I made a power point presentation for my parents to justify my need for a car.

8. Objective: I went camping with the objective to learn how to fish and how to make a fire.
