Notes/concerns: Have there been any significant changes since your last visit?
None.
Review: Did the parent (or other family member) get to play or read to the child since the last visit? Describe.
Both Stephanie’s mother and father have been reading to her every night at bedtime.
Describe the environment/atmosphere:
Everything was orderly and Stephanie and her mother were ready. When I arrived, Stephanie greeted me verbally for the first time, and answered me when I said “how are you?”
What did you do to introduce/review the new toy, book, or activity?
Mrs. Jones had Pat the Bunny, Where’s Spot, and the Wagon of Blocks all out on the table. I started by picking up Where’s Spot and started to read it, but Stephanie express immediate interest in playing with the block wagon, so I followed her lead. We emptied the wagon and I watched Stephanie build with the blocks, describing what she was doing the whole time. Then I showed her how to fit the blocks back into the wagon, like a puzzle. Each time I placed a block in the wagon I labeled it by color and shape, and then told her to put a block next to mine. Sometimes she would stack the block on top of mine, but I repeated the concept of “next to” and showed her what that meant. She caught on. I also showed her how to make noises by banging and rubbing the blocks together. We then went on to reading Where’s Spot.
What was the child’s reaction/participation?
Stephanie was initially interested in playing with the wagon of blocks only. After playing with the blocks for about 15 minutes, as described above, she also became interested in reading the book. She seemed to have difficulty understanding who Spot was, but had a lot of interest in lifting the flaps and uncovering the hidden animals. When playing with the blocks, she also appeared to enjoy banging them together and dancing to the rhythm. Stephanie got more interested in the book when her Mom read to her and pointed out objects in the book and named them. Stephanie and her Mom laughed when I pretended that the alligator bit my finger. This is the first time I’ve seen Stephanie relax and laugh.
How did the parent participate?
Mrs. Jones took a turn reading the book and pointed out and labeled many of the pictures. She also named a lot of the colors. She made a game of knocking on each flap and saying “Are you in there Spot?” Stephanie snuggled with her Mom when she did that and they both appeared to be having a good time.
