Home Learning Activities Autumn 2015 Year 1

Our new theme ‘Fact or Fiction?’ has startedand this half-term it is linked to the text ‘Traditional Tales.’ Please remember ALL RED activities need to be completed by your child. There is no particular order and you can choose as many of the BLACK activities to do over the coming weeks.

We encourage the children to take pride in their work both in school and at home, and therefore ask that these books are taken care of and work is presented carefully (ie writing/pictures are done on a separate piece of paper and the paper is stuck into their book.)

Books should returned to school by WEDNESDAY, so that children can share their work with their classmates and teachers can mark them, before returning them to the children each FRIDAY.

Try as many of the REDand BLACKactivities as you can.

  • .Story in a box- children create a story scene using a shoe box. Pick a traditional tale, add the characters, scenery and objects to add interest.
  • Write the story of your traditional tale or maybe you could act it out with your family, take some photos and then add a caption for each picture.
  • Do some cooking linked to a traditional tale, eg porridge, as in Goldilocks and the Three Bears, gingerbread house as in Hansel and Gretel, cupcakes decorated to look like your favourite character, Huntsman’s Stew as in Red Riding Hood.
  • Find some Fairytale story settings in Real life eg go for a walk in the woods.
  • Go on a Fairytale hunt and take photos eg find a cottage, find a river etc

English:

  • Read 5 Traditional tales and add them to your list of books you have read. (Remember for every 5 books you get a gold star.)
  • Draw your favourite fairy tale character eg The big bad wolf, The Three little pigs, Cinderella, The Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk and add some describing words/sentences.
  • Make a list of Traditional tales/Fairy stories.
  • Use the words from your high frequency word list, practise reading, spelling them out loud and writing them.

Maths

  • Practise counting regularly in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s (forwards and backwards, starting at different numbers, not always from 0 or back from 100.)
  • Practise showing/saying all pairs of numbers that make 10 eg 2 + 8, 7 + 3 or 20 eg 15 + 5, 12 + 8 etc if your child is confident with 10.
  • Practise number formation, single and 2 digit numbers, check they have written them correctly and in the correct order eg seventeen is 17 not 71 and writing the number names to ten and then twenty.
