Home check guidelines

You should have received a copy of the completed Adoption Application form and Expenses form along with these Guidelines. A letter will have been sent to the Potential New Home confirming who will be contacting them to arrange a home visit. We would appreciate it if you could make contact with them within 7 days (even if you cannot do the visit that soon – it just keeps people interested rather than going off to buy a puppy) !!

Whenever possible please take one or two of your dogs along with you - if moulting all the better!

Stage 1

  • Check details on New Owner form sent by re-homing officer. (Do the details add up with what you see?)
  • Assess how old they are and general fitness
  • If they have children how do they behave and integrate around other pets (if any) ?
  • Where is the house e.g. near a main road? Does the front door open directly onto a road etc.,
  • How long will the dog be left alone whilst the owners are out ?
  • Where will the dog be left ?
  • If they have any other pets, how will they integrate them?
  • Are they likely to have neighbour problems ?
  • Do they have any knowledge and understanding of the breed?

Once satisfied they have a good understanding of the implications of owning a Siberian Husky (a Welfare one at that) and what life is like living with one and providing, in your opinion they would be suitable then move onto stage 2.

Stage 2

Once you have established their suitability, look at where the dog would be kept. Is it adequate ? Are the fences at least 6ft high and of adequate construction ? If the dog is left for periods of time unattended, is the area safe? If they have a run, is the base of a solid construction and does it have a roof ? Can the dog escape ?

Please do not imply they will get a husky if they raise their fencing and build a run.

As soon as you can, please let the re-homing officer that contacted you know your thoughts and opinions on the home and how the visit went.

Don’t forget to complete and forward your Expenses Form to the Treasurer. Thank you so much for your help and good luck!

REMEMBER - WE STRONGLY ADVISE YOU NOT TO CARRY OUT A HOME VISIT ON YOUR OWN. PLEASE BE CAREFUL.
