Home and School Meeting
Rm. 14, Carman Collegiate
June 2, 2014 – 5 p.m.

With regret, the Home and School committee accepts the resignation of Fernanda Felgueiras as the President of the Home and School committee.
In Fernanda’s absence, the meeting was called to order at 5:05 p.m
Meeting minutes from May 5, 2014 were available for circulation.
Old Business:
a) Teacher Appreciation Breakfast - Appreciation was expressed from Jack on behalf of the school staff for coordination and donations from parents towards the staff appreciation breakfast held on May 13th.
Administration Report:
a) Health expo day for Bio 30 students - A pilot program was held on May 29th for 24 Bio 30 students who had opportunity to experience different career options in the health care field – ie Pharmacy, Concussions, Blood Donor services, Lab imagery, Alzheimer’s, understanding the design of grocery category management and nutrition. The day was well received by students and will be evaluated to offer in future years, subject to continued partnerships.
b) May 29th was a busy place in Carman Collegiate with hosting 739 athletes in the Hershey Track & Field meet and creating the largest sales day for the school canteen; CES held their Grade 1 & 2 afternoon dress rehearsal and evening school concert in the theatre while a school Much Music video dance was taking place in the gymnasium, with no musical interference between the 2 venues.
c) June – very busy month of upcoming events as outlined on the WIKI. The STARS helicopter landing scheduled for June 3rd at Carman Collegiate has been moved to the Dufferin airport. The Snowbirds are doing a fly-over of Carman the afternoon of June 3rd. The celebratory athletic banquet being held June 19th is proceeding with students requested to pick up their banquet tickets by June 10th from the main office to assist the caterer in finalizing meal numbers. All Grade 9-12 students involved in school sports are encouraged to come.
d) Final exam exemptions: A question was asked whether Carman Collegiate would re-implement final exam exemptions for students who had reached a certain grade percentage. The answer is no, it is a PRSD wide policy that exemptions will not be granted at any course level.
New Business:
a) 3 Year Plan: The Collegiate is in the process of setting its new 3 year plan, as the current 3 year plan which included the goals of Student Learning; Engagement; and Respect; expired March 31, 2014. Jack and Garth will be meeting with the PRSD on June 12th with a new proposal for the next Collegiate’s 3 year plan and goals.
b) Withdrawal of Carman Collegiate from Zone IV Baseball Leagues: Carman Collegiate is considering the withdrawal of our school from the Zone IV Baseball competition (boys and girls), with their aim to help Carman Minor Ball improve its registration numbers for students who wish to play community ball. They also with to alleviate some of the competition for students with conflicts between various school programs, along with staff who are involved in many extra-curricular programming with students. This will be further discussed at the September Home & School meeting, if you have an opinion please come out to express your views on September 15th.
c) School Open House - will be scheduled in fall for the evening of September 11th. Be sure to mark your calendar!
This was the final Home and School meeting for the 2013-2014 school year.
