HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY TAKES PLACE IN TENDRING

Victims of the Holocaust were remembered at a special ceremony which took placeon Clacton Seafront today.

Tendring District Council (TDC) Interim Leader Paul Honeywood accompanied members of the Colchester and District Jewish Community to the Sunken Rose Garden on Marine Parade West.

The annual ceremony has been held by the Council for the past eight years as part of nationwide events to pay tribute to victims.

Cllr Honeywood said that the ceremony is always a time for quiet reflection and to remember those who suffered terrible persecution under Nazi racial and social policy.

“I am honoured to be representing TDC at the ceremony today, standing alongside members of the Jewish Community,” he said.

“This event is an opportunity to think back and reflect. It is vital that we learn the lessons from what happened in the past and ensure that nothing like it ever happens again.”

He was also joined by other Tendring Councillors at the Sunken Rose Garden along with members of the public.

Prayers were led by John Gottesman, Chairman of the Colchester Synagogue.

Dhirajlal and Sushila Karia from Shree Ram Mandir Hindu Cultural and Heritage Centre in Clacton also offered the Prayer in Sanskrit and lit a candle to pay their respect.

A poem was also read out which had been written by Holocaust survivor Dora Love, who had previously attended one of the ceremonies at Clacton, and sadly died two years ago.

Holocaust Memorial Day has been commemorated throughout the country for more than ten years.

In 2007 TDC planted a white rose bush on the seafront site and the following year a specially-commissioned plaque was set in the ground alongside the rose bush.

The Council currently has a poster display remembering the Holocaust in the foyer of Clacton Town Hall.
