Hollow Oak Land Trust and Trail Pittsburgh are seeking a candidate for a fulltime position as Trail Project Manager, who will work in the greater Pittsburgh area.
Overview:
The Trail Project Manager position (TPM) is a fulltime, salaried exempt position responsible for successful management of volunteer trail projects as well as fee-based consulting/contracting projects and for advancement of Trail Pittsburgh and Hollow Oak Land Trust guidelines for building sustainable single track trail systems. The TPM works with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, Trail Management Committee, volunteer trail stewards, municipal land managers and private landowners. The position assumes 40 hours per work week.
Responsibilities
Project Execution:
● Oversee project lifecycle, including all aspects of planning, coordination, and implementation of trail projects, including planning, design, building and maintenance.
● Coordinate project planning with Trail Stewards and other volunteers.
● Create and manage project bids, proposals, contracts, subcontracts, invoices, project documentation, and job cost analysis.
● Develop projects and create positive relationships with volunteers, clients, landowners and land managers.
● Provide project status updates to Executive Director, Boards of Directors, Chair of Trail Management and the Lead Trail Steward for Hollow Oak Land Trust.
● Write project reports.
Personnel and Volunteers:
● Manage volunteers and hired contractors to ensure proper implementation of trail projects.
● Oversee scheduling of trail events and volunteers to ensure excellent delivery of services. Including
delivery of tools and supplies as needed for volunteer projects.
● Respond to volunteer and member inquiries. Assist volunteers in acquiring equipment and supplies for projects.
● Provide feedback for performance reviews.
Business Development:
● Help develop program based marketing efforts and develop marketing materials as needed.
● Provide public presentations and demonstrations as needed.
● Contribute to the production of articles, blogs, and other promotional/educational materials
Administration:
● Assist with creation of annual program budgets.
● Develop project budgets.
● Assist with management of program in compliance with budget.
● Provide support to volunteer Trail Stewards for projects and activities.
● Supervise staff within consulting/contracting programs.
● Manage information and data storage/sharing.
● Evaluate Trail Pittsburgh and Hollow Oak Land Trust programs and provide feedback as requested.
● Implement policies and procedures in risk management and safety guidelines.
● Coordinate projects with County and City staff, private land owners and managers.
Qualifications:
● Exceptional leadership skills.
● Extensive experience with the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and management of sustainable woodland trail systems.
● Project Management experience in a team environment.
● Experience with GIS and other mapping software.
● Extensive knowledge of trail use, such as hiking, mountain biking and trail running.
● Experience with managing private consulting/contracting firm and personnel.
● Experience working with land management agencies and other government entities.
● Experience working in a not-for-profit business environment and with volunteer advocates.
● B.A/B.S. degree in related field (e.g. construction/business management, engineering, parks & recreation, natural sciences) or similar combination of experience and education.
● Skilled in a variety of office based software systems (e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Apps).
● Skilled in a variety of consulting/contracting specific software systems (e.g., MS Project).
● Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
● Personable and able to work within a customer service framework.
● Access to a vehicle to tow 3000 lb trailer; experience and ability to tow trailer to events.
● Knowledge of flora & fauna and habitat restoration a plus.
Physical Requirements:
● Ability to walk on uneven, rough and steep terrain, handle and manipulate objects, tools, or control and operate mechanical equipment.
● Ability to stand and sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and navigate stairs.
● Ability to carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
● Ability to withstand conditions including extreme cold, extreme heat, and humidity, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, as well as wet and slippery conditions.
● Ability to walk between 1 to 3 miles to get to worksites.
Safe Equipment Usage
● Shovel, Rake, Rogue, McLeod, Mattock, Loppers, Wheelbarrows.etc)
● Basic power tools.
● Occasional use of chain saw (certification opportunities will be provided)
● Certified Dingo Usage
The successful candidate will be passionate about hiking, mountain biking and other trail uses with an energetic, “can-do” personality, and who is comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
