Holidays on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in its 200th Year
A year-long celebration of England’s longest single-waterway canal – the Leeds and Liverpool – makes this a great year to discover this varied waterway.
It took 46 years to build the 127 mile canal which in 1816 was an important trade route, but now provides access to beautiful moorland and valley scenery, and historic towns like Saltaire, Skipton, Burnley and Wigan. There are locks to open, tunnels to navigate, towpaths to cycle or walk along, pubs to eat in and shops to browse: plenty of interest during a week’s cruise.
Celebratory events include Saltaire World Heritage Weekend on 16/17 April, Skipton Canal Festival at May Day Bank Holiday weekend, Liverpool’s Inland Waterway Festival on 10/11 June, Burscough Heritage Weekend 18/19 June, Blackburn Canal Festival 23/24 July and Burnley Canal Festival 27-29 August.
Britain’s leading boating holidays agency Waterways Holidays has two hire bases along the canal: Barnoldswick and Riley Green. Holidaymakers can take in the wild beauty of the moors, up Bank Newton Locks to Gargrave and Skipton. Or navigate through the Foulbridge Tunnel into Calderdale and the ‘cotton’ towns of Nelson and Burnley.
Narrowboats may be hired for three, four or seven nights. A week’s rental from Barnoldswick for a 53-feet long Leicester-class boat sleeping two couples, or a family of four (with flexible bed layouts) costs from £1,060.
This includes car parking while cruising, buoyancy aids and a fully-kitted out boat, instruction before setting off, an information pack with guidebook, damage waiver and all fuel used during the trip. One family pet is free, with others welcome at a supplement.
