Hoggard Cheerleading Tryout Information

Hoggard High School strives to build the best cheerleading program in the state of North Carolina with squads that excel in academics, support for Hoggard athletic teams, school spirit, and competitive cheerleading.

Tryout Dates:

May 20, 21: mandatory tryout practices 4:00-6:00. Bring completed application to first day of tryout practice.

May 23: tryout 4:00-until finished

What to expect at tryouts:

You will be taught one cheer, one dance, and jumps. Stunting and tumbling will not be taught at tryouts. There will be people available for light spotting while you are warming up, but only on skills that you have experience with. We will not spot you on a standing back handspring if you have never tried one before. Also, when you perform your tumbling for the actual tryout, you cannot have a spot. The most competitive applicants in the past have performed a tumbling pass, standing back handspring, and tuck.

Tryout Procedure:

  • Mandatory tryout practices will be held in the Hoggard Gym. Roll will be taken.
  • Shorts, shirts, and athletic shoes must be worn at all times. NO JEWELRY!
  • You must be ready to begin practice at 4:00! Promptness everyday will be expected.

Applicants will be judged on the following skills:

One cheer

  • Dance routine
  • Jumps (toe touch ,any other jump, combo jump)
  • Flyers - Heel stretch both sides,
  • Splits left/right/middle
  • Tumbling
  • Tumbling will be observed on each of the three tryout days
  • Unspotted standing back handspring, (two consecutive back handsprings suggested for varsity)
  • Standing tuck for varsity (spot allowed)
  • Optional tumbling pass
  • Strength (pushups)
  • One mile run (timed)

Mandatory Events:

  • Mandatory Practices: May 28,29,30, 4:30-6:30 in the Hoggard Gym
  • Mandatory Parent Meeting: May 28at 6:30 in the Cafeteria
  • UCA Stunt clinic/fundraiser June 1, 11:30-5:30
  • Free Physicals: May 23, 6:00 pm (NHC Health Dept)
  • The events listed below are mandatory for all Hoggard Cheerleaders. Do not commit to either team unless you can commit to these dates.
  • Practice prior to Cheerleading Camp8/1, 8/2, 8/5
  • Cheerleading Camp 8/6/13–8/9/13(Concord, NC)
  • Jamboree Showcase: Practice Aug 12-15, Showcase Aug 16 (Varsity performs/JV goes to watch). JV also practices this week.
  • NCHSAA Cheerleading Competition:November 17, 2013(Raleigh Convention Center)
  • UCA Regional Competition:November23, 2013 (Greensboro)
  • PortCity Challenge: January 25, 2014 (Ashley HS)
  • ?? Nationals: February 2014 (Orlando, FL)

Duties and Requirements:

  1. The student must have passed three classes during both the spring and fall semesters and have a “C” average in order to be eligible to cheer.
  2. Any cheerleader who breaks school rules may also receive consequences within the squad and may be dismissed.
  3. If disciplinary actions not covered in policies are necessary they will be decided upon by the cheerleading coach and the school administration.
  4. Any unscheduled practice will be announced at least one day ahead of time. Any absence without prior approval by the coach will result in an unexcused absence.
  5. Doctor’s appointments, unless emergencies, should not be scheduled for practice or game days.
  6. All cheerleaders must attend all games including tournament and playoff games.We sometimes have games on non school days.
  7. Cheerleaders are expected to be at the stadium one hour before the game starts, unless otherwise stated by the coach.
  8. All members will travel outside the NewHanoverCountySchool area as a unit.
  9. You must be counted present for at least ½ day on game days or you will not be allowed to cheer that night. You must dress out and sit with the coach if you are not counted present for ½ the school day.
  10. If you lose or damage any part of your uniform you are responsible for immediate replacement.
  11. All cheerleaders must attend summer camp (Deposit due immediately.)
  12. All cheerleaders must practice one week before summer camp.
  13. All cheerleaders must participate in fundraisers.
  14. All cheerleaders must get a physical before the first practice begins.

The only concessions that will be made during tryout week will be for academic reasons and spring sports participants. Keeping this in mind, please do not commit to other events that may conflict with tryouts. Please give serious thought to any other obligation you already have. If these require out-of-town engagements or conflict with practices, it may be necessary to make a choice.

I understand that he/she must abide by the duties and requirements set forth by the coach and administration of HoggardHigh School. I understand that attendance at all scheduled events (games, practices, fundraisers, etc.) is mandatory and that repeated absences can result in removal from the cheerleading squad.

I understand that by the nature of the activity, cheerleading and gymnastics carry a risk of physical injury. No matter how careful the participant and coach are, how many spotters are used, or what landing surface is used, the risk cannot be eliminated. The risk also includes major injuries such as muscle pulls, dislocation, and broken bones. The risk also includes catastrophic injuries such as permanent paralysis or even death from landing or falls on the back, neck, or head. I understand these risks and will not hold HoggardHigh School or any of its personnel in the case of accident or injury at any time.

  • I understand that summer camp (8/6 – 8-9) and practice one week prior to camp are mandatory.
  • I understand that a $100.00 camp deposit will be due at the mandatory Varsity and JV cheerleading meeting on May 28, 2013.
