/ I am Malala. (Young Readers Edition) by MalalaYousafzaiThe Nobel Peace Prize winner retells her experiences at home and at school and discusses the impact of the Taliban presence in Pakistan. Her strong voice and ideals come across on every page, emphasizing how her surroundings and supportive family helped her become the relevant figure she is today.

Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai. Through a series of poems, a young girl chronicles the life-changing year of 1975, when she, her mother, and her brothers leave Vietnam and resettle in Alabama.
Shooting Kabul by N. H. Senzai. Escaping from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan in the summer of 2001, eleven-year-old Fadi and his family immigrate to the San Francisco Bay Area, where Fadi schemes to return to the Pakistani refugee camp where his little sister was accidentally left behind.
The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida. A journey into the mind of a remarkable thirteen-year-old Japanese boy with severe autism shares firsthand insights into a variety of experiences associated with the disorder, from behavioral traits and misconceptions to perceptions about the world.
ADVANCED READER OPTION:
Rainbow Troops by Andrea Hirata. At the poorest village school in Indonesia, Ikal and his friends struggle to pursue their dream of schooling.

*Assignment: Select your favorite quote from one of the novels you read and create a visual for it. On the back of your visual write one of the IB learner profiles and analyze how one of the characters exhibited the trait. BE CREATIVE! (Your ELA teacher will collect the project.)
