The summer term has been very busy and Frant have enjoyed many successful tournaments

Hockey Finals – Beacon wed 20th April

The tournament was played as a round robin which means all the teams play each other. There were 7 teams in total and Frant came 2nd overall which was brilliant. They only lost to St Johns, who were the eventual winners, by 2 goals (5-3) and unfortunately only one team could qualify for the county final.

The squad: Ned Hayes, Matthew Summers, Jesse Scully, Ruairi Cummings, Molly Brignell and Xanthe Paull.

Special mention must go to India Turner and Oliver Barlow who trained with the team leading up to the tournament so that the numbers worked for them to play a game.

Football matches against Withyham

Peter Price has organised several tournaments this term but unfortunately it has usually only been Frant and Withyham participating. I have taken these opportunities to give as many children as possible, a chance to play.

Children in squad: Eva Gray, Matthew Harris, Jack Rowell, Scott Paull, Scarlett Turner, Emilia Belfield, Toby Goddard, Caleb Gurney, Xanthe O’Brien, Ollie Bourne, Josh Malin, Matthew Summers, Jesse Scully, Ned Hayes, Ruairi Cummings, Jack Buss, James Harris, Xanthe Paull, Matilde Marshall, Molly Brignell, Mia Gray.

Tag Rugby – May 4th

The Wasps went to the next round of the cluster tournament to be held at Uckfield rugby club. They all played brilliantly and made the final against St Johns with whom they drew. So we share the cup and will have it at school for 6 months. More importantly we got through to the next round which was a level 3 county final – Frant have never got this far in any sport – AN OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT!!

Squad: Jesse Scully, Matthew Summers, Ruairi Cummings, Ned Hayes, Molly Brignell, India Turner, Mia Gray, Molly Macintyre, Ellouise Adams-Webb.

The Bees went to the Tunbridge Wells festival at TWRFC and after the pool rounds they were in the Shield competition. They won their quarter final, their semi-final but unfortunately were runners up in the final losing by just 2 tries. They all made a huge improvement in their game and played well as a team.

Squad: George Waterson, James Harris, Ashton Keene, Max Moore, Oliver Barlow, Heidi Shapton, Matilde Marshall , Clara Tame, Bobby Jeal.

TagrugbyCounty final – Brighton RFC

This was held at Brighton and consisted of the top 18 teams in the whole of the county.

We turned up in thunder, lightning and rain and then played in slippery conditions and sweltering heat. There were 3 pools of 6 teams and Frant won 3 matches and lost 2 matches. This put us 3rd in our pool so we were then put into the next part of the competition to work out placings overall. They played another 5 matches and lost one, drew 2 and won 2. This placed us 9th which is a fantastic achievement and interestingly the 2 teams we lost to in the first round came 1st and 3rd overall so we obviously had been given a tough pool.

The children were absolutely first class in their effort. They fully concentrated all of the time and gave their all. There wasn’t a single match in which they could have improved. We were the only school to have more than 2 girls in the squad and certainly the ONLY school who had 4 girls on the pitch at any one time. They worked respectfully as a team and that is why they did so well – I am so very proud of them and thanks go to Jim Scully for his coaching

Cricket

We have had several girls’ tournaments this year. The first was held at Bells Yew Green where the girls played the first stages of the tournament and were through to the Googly league competition which they then won.

Squad: Molly Brignell, Molly Macintyre, India Turner, Mia Gray, Elsie Miller, Sophie Lumsden, Emilia Belfield, Ellouise Adams-Webb

The next competition was held at Buxted and this time Clara Tame was added to the squad. They won the competition and went through to the County Final – again NEVER BEFORE HAPPENED!!

The County Final was played on the 19th July at Hurstpierpoint College. The girls had a tough pool but won one of their games and scored the highest number of runs they have scored all season, in every single game. This is an outstanding effort and the girls finished off their competition with a win in the afternoon, putting them in the top half of the placings. WELL DONE TO ALL THE GIRLS.

The Boys also played at Buxted in an open competition consisting of 9 teams. We won our pool matches comfortably which put us through to the semi-finals. Unfortunately we then lost so finished a respectful 4th overall. Our bowling was great and hardly any wides were given – the other 3 teams just played better than us on the day.

Squad: Ruairi Cummings, Jesse Scully, Matthew Summers, Ned Hayes, Jack Buss, George Waterson, Oliver Barlow, Molly Brignell, Mia Gray

Thanks to Trevor Vousden for all his help with the coaching and for donating a ‘Crazy Catch’ to the school.

Quadkids Athletics

This is a very difficult competition where 4 boys and 4 girls make up a school team. They all have to throw, jump, sprint and run a long distance race. We normally do not make it into the top half of the finishing schools as it is mostly larger schools who participate from the Crowborough cluster but this year we came 2nd. Athlete’s individual scores are compiled and congratulations should go to Matthew Summers who finished 6th and Ruairi Cummings who finished 8th out of 32 athletes. Also a special mention to India Turner who really ran herself into the ground so that the Frant team all completed the long distance in under 2 minutes 40 seconds.

Squad: Ruairi Cummings, Jesse Scully, Matthew Summers, George Waterson, India Turner, Molly Brignell, Mia Gray, Clara Tame

Netball

VSA Netball tournament – This was a round robin tournament which means all the schools played each other. Frant entered 2 teams:

Frant Lightning – Ned Hayes, Oliver Barlow, Jack Buss, Bobby Jeal, Xanthe Paull, Mia Gray, Heidi Shapton

Frant Storm - Jesse Scully, India Turner, Molly Macintyre, Molly Brignell, Clara Tame, Ruairi Cummings, Matthew Summers.

Frant Storm won the whole tournament and everyone had a great, well played, sunny afternoon.

Thanks to Diane Young for all her help with the coaching.

Awards and Cups

This year I decided to make awards in a special assembly which all parents were invited to on Friday 15th July. Although only one child can win a cup I did tell them all who had been nominated for each cup and why they had been chosen.

Unfortunately the assembly was not well attended so I will publish winners of awards in this newsletter as I think it is nice for the children to get recognition for what they have achieved.

I have donated 2 more cups to the school – one for commitment and one for improvement. The year 6 leavers’ parents have very kindly donated another cup for outstanding achievement.

Swimming Awards Molly Macintyre and Toby Goddard

Cricket cups Ruairi Cummings and Molly Brignell

Commitment to sport Jesse Scully and Matthew Summers

Improvement in sport Mia Gray

Outstanding sportsperson Ruairi Cummings

It has been a pleasure teaching all the children and I hope they all have a relaxing summer holiday. I wish all the year 6’s the best of luck...... keep playing your sport!!
