MIT HOBBY SHOP RULES

March, 2017

Every member using the Hobby Shop is expected to cooperate in preserving good order and safety. Members are expected to understand and follow the rules while using the shop.

1) Upon joining the Hobby Shop every member must complete the basic safety orientation. Members must ask staff for full instruction before using any machine tool in the shop for the first time, even if they have used the same tool in another shop. Only current members are allowed to use the Hobby Shop.

2)Please, ask questions; Always.! You may not know, may not be sure, or may not remember. It is always better to ask if you are unsure of what you are about to do.

3)Safety is our first priority;Appropriate eye protection and clothing must be worn in the shop. Safety equipment such as dust masks, hearing protection, etc. are to be used when necessary. Shoes must be closed-toed (no sandals, ballerina slippers or shoes that may causeyou to be un-steady). Long hair must be tied back and long sleeves and dangling accessories must be removed. Members must follow safety directions of the Director or designee-in-charge or they will be asked to leave the shop.

4)In the Hobby Shop, members are expected to be considerate and conscious of each other and each other’s work. Give persons working on machinery their space, and keep a safe distance from moving cutters. If you witness someone who may be putting themselves in danger, please say something or inform the person in charge immediately.

5)It is everyone’s job to keep the shop clean and tools in their proper place. Machines should be cleaned, setups taken down, and tooling put away before moving on to your next job. The Director or designee-in-charge must be notified if a machine is broken or not working properly. Scrap must be disposed of or placed in the appropriate scrap area.

6)Space is limited. Materials for current projects by current members are allowed in the shop; material not being worked on currently needs to be removed. Any project or materials left in the Hobby Shop for a term without being worked on, or having the Director’s permission to store, may be disposed of without notice.

7)The Hobby Shop is open to the MIT community but is primarily for the use of MIT students. While some building steps require long periods of time on a machine, preference is given to short term need especially for students. Therefore it is up to the Director or designee-in-charge to decide if someone has to give up a machine for someone else’s use.

8)A calm atmosphere is important for safety in a shop where dangerous equipment is being used. Rushing or working in an agitated state is not safe and is a reason for being asked to leave the shop.

9)Hobby Shop memberships are designated for individual shop use and may not be shared. Because resources, machinery and tooling are finite in the Hobby Shop we discourage members from working on multiple or non-members projects.

10)Disputes or other problems between members should be reported to whoever is in charge at the time or to the Director. Members may bring disputes with the Hobby Shop management to the Director of Programs for the Campus Activities Complex, the Chairman of the Hobby Shop Committee, or the Hobby Shop Committee.
