Mission and Charter Statement

Group Name: Patient Safety Special Interest Group

Mission

This group supports the HL7 mission to create and promote its standards by creating a standard message structure for patient safety[1] to facilitate the reporting and investigation of patient safety incidents[2].

PSSIG will also work with other committees and SIGs and through other HL7 internal organizational structuresto ensure thatspecification developers give due consideration to patient safety issues and incorporate appropriate guidance for implementers.

Finally, complementary information (which provides context and assists in the analysis of incidents) will be identifiedguidance and terminology will be developed to support the use of anddecision support triggers will be embedded to ensure the information is exchangeable and interoperable in HL7 v3 onward compliant systems of relevant parties.

Work Products and Contributions to HL7 Processes

  • This Special Interest GroupPSSIG will provide a joint forum for members of thefrom relevant TCs and SIGs concerned with clinical messages that might (by their developmentor implementation) impact the safety of patients.
  • This groupPSSIG will produce normative standards for messages about the reporting of, management of and responses to adverse events or product problems involving a product (e.g. medicine, device, food, cosmetic, biologic, etc.) and patient safety incidents.
  • Coordinate and cooperate with other groups to promote the reduction or prevention of patient safety incidents via the effective use of properly designed and implemented HL7 messages.

Formal Relationships with Other HL7 Groups

Regulated Clinical Research Information Management (RCRIM) – parent TC.

Public Health Emergency Response – share public health reporting domain.

Patient Care – developers of an adverse event model that includes allergic reactions etc.

Formal Relationships with Groups Outside of HL7

PSSIG has no formal relationships with groups outside of HL7 but would welcome participation from those interested in the patient safety agenda. PSSIG does maintain informal links with a variety of national and international organisations that are active in the patient safety domain.These liaisons will be with the approval of the HL7 Board in accordance with its Policy and Procedures.

Definition of patient – living subject, human and animal?

[1] PSSIG’s definition of patient safety is - the multidisciplinary approach used by an organization to reduce the risk and occurrence of harm to patients as a result of their healthcare.

[2]PSSIG’s definition of a patient safety incident is - any unintended, expected orunexpected circumstance(s) that could have or did lead to harm for one or more patients receiving health care services. These incidents may include errors of omission or commission.
