HIT 102 – Spreadsheets – Outline

HOOK – suggestions:

1.  M&M Math - Using Graph Club – Have participants graph the number of M&M’s they have – giving a brief intro to the software. (use M&M spreadsheet)

  1. Give each group a copy of the spreadsheet and a bag of M&M’s. Have them manually enter their data on the paper copy. In graph club, have them enter their information and graph it.

2.  Using E Instruction – have teachers vote on an item of your choice and graph it.

Team Building Practice/Small Group –

  1. Using a formatted spreadsheet – Give each individual or group a copy of the blank M&M spreadsheet and have him or her enter the information in the electronic version of the M&M spreadsheet in Excel.

OR

  1. They can gather the data by walking around and interviewing each other. For example how many hours of TV and how many hours do you read nightly or weekly. Or choose a topic that better suits your participants. This would ensure that everyone has the same data entered and this can be used for the guided practice.

Guided Practice - Explain uses of spreadsheets/ spreadsheets vs. databases – compare (Look at SEC Football spreadsheet or use M&M spreadsheet already created to use as guide)

·  Selecting cells by click and drag, click and shift, ctrl and click

·  Text Wrap

·  Shrink to fit

·  Borders

·  Background colors

·  Resizing columns and rows- show how if number becomes too large it becomes symbols unless column resized.

2. Working with Worksheets

·  Adding worksheets

·  Naming and renaming worksheets

3. Working with Formulas and Functions

·  Formula Tool Bar- x=cancel, check=enter formula

·  Show auto sum function, and Paste function in toolbar (explore the list of other formulas but demo auto sum and average)

4. Using Charts and Objects

·  Selecting data and names

·  Using the chart wizard

o  Preview chart

o  Different types of charts

o  Creating title

o  X and Y titles

o  Showing values

o  Showing data table

o  Chart location options- naming chart

5. Page Setup and Printing

·  Printing entire workbook vs. only one sheet or chart

·  Margins

·  Landscape

·  Header and footer
