History of the Junior Service League of Rome

1940-1941Mrs. Harold Hunter

Red Cross work undertaken. Eighth Ward Lunchroom equipped and staffed. Sponsored play, "Emperor's Treasure Chest." Second Follies produced.

1941 -1942Mrs. George Glenn

West Rome lunchroom equipped. Placement Committee to keep account of League members' work began. Marionette show given. Rummage sale for moneymaker. Dental Clinic staffing by League members began.

1942-1943Mrs. Jack Smith

Marionettes and Open Door Home work suspended due to World War II. Red Cross, TB, Lunchroom, and Welfare work continued with emphasis on Red Cross for duration of war. Volunteers served at USO and Ration Board as needed. Dances held as entertainment for Berry Aviation Cadets.

1943-1944Mrs. Jack Smith

Entertainment for enlisted men at Government Hospital replaced dances for Berry cadets. South Rome lunchroom equipment bought.

1944-1945 Mrs. Meredeth Graham

Ways and Means projects included a carnival. Lunchroom equipment for Central Primary and Fourth Ward purchased.

1945-1946Mrs. Meredeth Graham

Third Follies in May with proceeds earmarked for purchase of playground equipment for 15 elementary schools.

1946-1947Mrs. Wallace Grant

Floyd County Tuberculosis Association formed with former League president as executive Secretary, terminating League's total responsibility for the program. Members continued to contribute clerical help to Association. Marionette committee reinstituted. Hostessing at Shorter Art Exhibits began. Story Hour at Library started. Investigation concerning Speech teacher, to be employed by League and State in public schools, began.

1947 -1948Mrs. Lester Harbin

In September, League received charter from the State of Georgia and became the Junior Service League of Rome, Inc. Sponsored football game between Darlington and Castle Heights with dance after as moneymaking project. Edith Stroud hired as first speech teacher. Lunchroom equipment purchased for North Rome. Co-sponsored three plays with Civitan Club. Hours system instituted by Placement Committee with a minimum of 60 hours required of each member, 30 of which could be done on League endorsed projects such as Scouts, or Civic and Community Drives.

1948-1949Mrs. Jack Shoaf

Members began work at Floyd County Medical Society's state aid Cancer Clinic as nurses,receptionists and clerical assistants. Fourth Follies with proceeds to go to Speech Correction School.

1949-1950Mrs. Bolling Sullivan

Fifteenth Anniversary Dance. Speech Correction program incorporated in City Board ofEducation program. League will continue to pay teacher salary supplements. Fifth Follies proceeds again for Speech.
