Understandings:
This lesson is meant to showcase how this area transitioned from a provincial outpost to a manufacturing center, and then eventually an airport, military base and National Park. The juxtaposition of Manhattan and Floyd Bennett field is a relevant one because their development is closely related. / Essential Questions:
What role did Floyd Bennett Field play in the development of aviation?

Performance Tasks:
  • Create a Venn diagram to demonstrate the changes made to Floyd Bennett Field over time based on the slides shown
  • Students will do an assignment that predicts the future of their own neighborhood using two changes from the development of Floyd Bennett Field and NYC as a reference.

Stage 3 Learning Plan
. Learning Activities:
  • Students will be shown three slides of NYC from different time frames and asked to put them in chronological order.
  • They will then be asked to create A Venn Diagram demonstrating the commonalities and discordant attributes then and now.
  • Class will be broken into groups and given a set of photographs of Floyd Bennett Field and asked to identify the changes using NYC as a guideline.
