Softball
History-In 1887, a group of twenty young men had gathered in the Farragut Boat Club gym in order to hear the Harvard-Yale football game. After Yale’s victory, a man picked up a stray boxing glove and threw it at someone, who hit it with a pole. George Hancock is considered to be the inventor of softball tied the boxing glove so that it resembled a ball, chalked out a diamond on the floor, which gave it small dimensions than a regular baseball field to be able to fit in the gym, and broke off a broom handle to serve as a bat. Thus, a new version of baseball was born: softball.Hancock was fascinated, and in the following weeks developed a large ball and small bat for the sport. Rules and a league were established by the Boat Club in 1889, and the first league began in 1897 in Toronto.
The game
- The game is played by two teams of nine players each.
- A game is seven innings long, unless the score is tied then it would go into extra innings.
- Three strikes constitutes an out.
- Four balls not in the strike zone constitutes a walk.
- Three outs constitutes a team’s ½ inning and then the other home team bats to complete the inning.
- First base and home plate may be overrun safely by a base runner: 2nd and 3rd may not.
- Base stealing and bunting are legal in regulation softball, not in class.
- In regulation softball, if you attempt to bunt with two strikes and the ball goes foul, you are out.
- All pitching is done underhand.
- The pitcher must have one foot in contact with the pitching plate while pitching
- A base runner struck by a fair batted ball is out
- A base runner struck by a thrown ball is not out.
- A base runner may not interfere with a fielder who is attempting to play the ball.
- A fielder who is not playing the ball may not impede the progress of a runner.
- A runner is called out of they leave the base before the pitcher releases the ball.
- Base runners may not run outside the base path to avoid being tagged.
- Fair Ball-
- Infield-any ball touched in front of the bases inside the foul lines or comes to rest inside these lines
- Outfield-any ball hit in the air past first and third base landing inside the foul lines, regardless of where it rolls to or comes to rest.
- Foul Ball-any ball that hits and is touched outside the 3rd and 1st base lines
- Force play- when there is a runner on all bases behind you, you are forced to the next base
- Tag play-when base runners are not forced by players on each base behind them; they must be tagged with the ball before touching the base to cause an out.
