The Mobberley Dominoe League

History, Honours and Records

The Mobberley Victory Hall Memorial club is the headquarters of the league. Ana a hardcore of Mobberley teams has always formed the nucleus of the league which now includes teams from Knutsford, Ashley and Wilmslow.

Each 7 player team plays 91 up 5's and 3's with 9 dominoes each. You can't go out on your drop and must finish 'in the hole' with start decided on a lowest domino draw and the away player choosing their seat in games marked by the home team. Pair’s matches involve 6 dominoes each and the same rules.

League History:

The league began in 1968 as an alternative to the neighbouring Wilmslow league.

1997-98: All teams to be issued with 8 tickets and to bring a bottle for the raffle at the Presentation Evening. 15 teams in the league with Church Inn accepted to join the following season.

1998-99: Each venue to hold a raffle at Team KO matches to raise funds for the league. Church Inn had their Braille dominoes accepted for use in matches. Players to lose 5 points when not present to play when called. Players to choose their own engraving on any league trophies. One player from each club to be entered for the singles competition. Mere accepted into the league and the Falcon Bearer showed interest with the Builders Arms dropping out means 16 teams next season. Ilford will be known as Railway B next season due to their sports and social club closing down. New rule introduced as a result of a letter from Geoff Sharpe that if a ‘Joey’ is played and spotted immediately, it is replayed – if not so, then it stands unpunished.

1999-2000: The league now consists of Railway A and B, Mere, Greyhound, New Inn, Mobberley Victory Hall A and B, Rifleman, 5 Oaks, Church Inn, Shaw Heath, Liberals, Morley, Farmers Arms, Horse and Jockey and the Chapel House.

2000-01: Railway B and Church Inn drop out of the league and are replaced by two teams from the Bulls Head. The Chapel House are in trouble for bad language, not knowing the rules of the game, marking and moving their TV and are subsequently fined. Important results can now be phoned in to the Secretary.

2001-02: King Billy / William join the league and New Inn leave and there is a call for common-sense when striking out players. Trophies are to be returned to the Secretary clean after some are brought back in a less than tidy condition.

2002-03: Horse and Jockey withdrew from the league at the first meeting to leave just 15 teams this season.

2003-04: Wilmslow British Legion joins the league and there are new instructions regarding all fixtures needing to be completed by the latest stated date for a season.

2004-05: A new rule states ‘no show, no money’ for the presentation night with the league comprising Victory Hall A and B, Bulls Head A and B, Horse and Jockey A and B, Brook Street, Greyhound, Mere, Railway Inn, Five Oaks, Rifleman, Farmers Arms, King Billy, Morley and Wilmslow British Legion.

2005-06: A very quiet season with no major issues and all league teams being unchanged.

2006-07: The Bulls Head are having a variety of issues that eventually get resolved and a full set of rules are created. A couple of rules are soon amended with no penalty for knocking incorrectly and all matches to be played within 3 weeks of the original stated date.

2007-08: The league comprises of 16 teams from Mere, Morley, Greyhound, Railway, Five Oaks, Rifleman, King Billy, Farmers Arms, Brook Street and Wilmslow British Legion while the Bulls Head, Horse and Jockey and Victory Hall have two teams each. At the AGM it was agreed that should there ever be 20 teams in the league then it would split into 2 divisions. An article in the Knutsford Guardian from the league invites new teams to apply. No league winners details are noted in the league minutes.

2008-09: The Builders Arms, Shaw Heath and Chapel House join the league and Mere put in a second team as the Five Oaks, Horse and Jockey B and the two Bulls Head teams drop out.
