Humanities History 9 Group Creative Assignment: Write your own Greek Myth

September 5, 2006

Directions:

1. Divide into groups of two. You will need a laptop, or paper and a writing implement, if you absolutely must. (You will eventually need to type your final project.)

2. Knowing what you do about Greek mythology, and about why the Greeks told the stories they did, write your own Greek myth with your partner.

- Develop a hero or heroine, put him or her in some sort of conflict with the gods or

his /her fellow humans, and create a story around that that is in keeping with the myths you have learned about. (Check the requirements below for the elements your story must include.)

- Have fun, use your imagination and your knowledge of mythology.

3. Be sure to pay attention to the following requirements:

Requirements:

1. At least seven references to other myths or mythological characters. You may not simply list them; their role in the story must represent how the Greeks viewed them (their personality, function, etc).

2. As myths did for the Greeks, your myth must explain something, such as why something looks the way it does, or why people do something a certain way. Or your myth must have a moral.

3. Your myth must involve some kind of interaction between humans and gods, and must include some form of struggle between the individual’s will and the role of the gods.

4. Two pages, typed, double-spaced, absolute minimum length.

These myths are the (graded) basis of a larger project, so make your best effort.(See next page for a sample grading sheet.)

You will have two class periods to work on the myth, and it will be your only homework between now and Monday, when it is due in class. Today and your next day of class (depending on which section you are in) will be the only days you will have to work with your partner in class. After that, you will need to find time during study hall, at home using e-mail or other times to work out the final details with your partner. You will be working on the technological parts of the assignment on the other days. Each of you will eventually be turning in your own copy.

A typed, proofread and printed copy of this myth is due at the start of class on Monday, September 11. Late work will be graded down.
