HILLS WEST WAVES

2017 SUMMER SWIM TEAM

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost here! We are reminded of this on an almost daily basis when our mail arrives filled with brochures on summer sports camps, classes, etc. But don’t let your children miss out on one of the neighborhood’s best opportunities…the Hills West Waves Swim Team!

The Hills West Waves Swim Team provides children of all ages and swimming abilities a summer of social activities, team spirit, and fun close to home. Winning is important, but not our top priority. Our goal is to stress personal development, teamwork, and development of swimming techniques.

A lot of information is included in this packet. However, like last year, please rely on the team’s Team Unify website ( for all information this year, such as registration forms, volunteer signups, meet signups, practice updates, coaches comments, social events, team calendar, pool addresses, contact numbers, etc. Similar to most teams within the Mountain Hi Swim League, the Waves has moved to a comprehensive, online team management system ~ we are hopeful and confident that the team’s use of this system will continue to become more fluid and streamlined as we embark upon our 3rdseason using this platform!

TEAM MANAGEMENT NEEDS YOUR HELP!

For every swim season, the team has a group of parents who have agreed to share the “board” duties. The list on the following page outlines which of us is doing which portion of the team responsibilities. We are all committed to providing a great swim team experience for our kids and enjoy working together, but we need the help of every swim team family. The team is in need of parents with younger children to take on the larger, team management responsibilities. If you are interested in being trained to help organize and run the Waves, please contact Sarah Holder at 303-883-6201 or r Connie Plumleigh at 720-854-9577 or .

PRACTICE ONLY OPTION

There have been requests from neighborhood families in the past to have their children participate in the swim team weekly practices and fun, social events, but NOT participate in the Saturday swim meets. Like last year, the Waves will offer this option for the 2017 season! This option will be at an increased price and these families will be exempt from the volunteer requirementswhich relate to the team’s swim meets. See the registration section for further information.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

Volunteer shift obligations for each familyis set atsix mandatory shifts to be worked at the five dual/regular season meets. If you have a child who swims, you are EXPECTED AND REQUIRED to complete your shift requirements. It is essential with a small team like ours that everyone pitches in. It really is a fun way to see neighbors and friends and show support for your kids. See the meet staffing requirements section for further information.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS Reduced if you REFER a FRIEND

If you refer a NEW to Hills West Waves Family, you will reduce your shifts by one.

We look forward to a FUN season ~ Go Waves!

MISSION AND EXPECTATIONS

Mission:

The Hills West Waves Swim Team strives to help each child improve their swimming skills, challenge their personal best, and understand the importance of teamwork. We provide a healthy balance between recreation and competitionin a safe, fun, and supportive community environment so that each child learns, is challenged, and gains a sense of accomplishment.

Expectations:

Swimmers must be eighteen years and under as of June 1, 2017, and must be able to swim one length of the pool (25 meters) unassisted before they can swim in a meet. Attendance at practice sessions is very important. Failing to participate in practice not only hinders the swimmer’s skill development, but it creates an unfair situation for those swimmers who do participate in all practice sessions. Lack of attendance and/or tardiness at practices may result in a swimmer losing eligibility to participate in upcoming meet relays. We have a short swim season, starting on May 22nd and ending with Championships on July 15th(or July 22ndfor All-Stars Swimmers). Our end-of-the-season awards banquet will be held after Championships. Please keep these dates in mind when planning your vacations, and try to plan around the swim season.

Parent participation is mandatory for a successful swim season. This year we will be hosting two dual meets and Championships, and attending three away meets and two Preliminaries sessions. It takes a tremendous amount of work to run these meets successfully. The team cannot do it without your help so each family is required to work at least six (6) shifts during the dual meet/regular swim season. If your child swims in any of the post season meets (prelims, championships, and/or All-Stars), you will be required to work an additional shift at each of those meets to cover the team’s obligations. See the volunteer sheet for further information.

The Hills West Waves Swim Team is a member of the Mountain Hi Swim League (MHSL) and must follow the rules and regulations of the League. The League has four to five “divisions” each season depending upon the number of member teams– divisions A1/A2, B, C, and D. Placement in the divisions is based upon several factors: previous year’s win/loss record, the size of the team, number of All-Star qualifiers and number of All-Star participants. For the 2017 swim season, the Hills West Waves will be in the B division. For more information regarding the MHSL please refer to their website:

VOLUNTEER SHIFT SIGN-UPS

Parent support is the key to having a successful swim season. Please admit to your talents, whether they are known or things you’d just like to try. You’ll be surprised how easy and rewarding it can be. Each family is required to work a minimum of six (6) shifts during the dual meet/regular swim season, from May 22-July8. A shift is one-half of one dual meet (1ST shift is events 1-48 and 2nd shift is events 49-90). You may buy out of your regular season shifts for $300.00. If your child swims in any post season meets (prelims, championships, and/or All Stars), you will be required to work an additional shift at each meet to cover the team’s obligations to the entire division (all teams help to staff the post-season). There will be no buyout provisions for the post season meets.

Stroke and Turn Judges, Meet Referees and Starters require MHSL training. If you sign up for these positions you MUST attend one of the following training sessions, however the training will count as one of your required shifts, as long as you sign up for one of these positions.

TEAM SUITS, APPAREL EQUIPMENT

MI Sports will have swim suits and team sportswear displayed and available for sizing during in-person registration on April 11th at Deana Riopelle’s home. Mi Sports will place the Waves’ orders to ensure delivery by the first swim meet. Please contact MI Sports directly at 970-667-3539 if you miss the team opportunity to place orders. While swim suit sizing may be confusing to newcomers, the experts at MI Sports (as well as seasoned families) will be happy to assist you!

Hills West Waves swimsuits, caps with logo (silicone and latex), swim fins, goggles, bungee goggle straps, hoodies, sweat pants, T-shirts, mesh swim shorts, adult polo shirts, fins, etc. will be available to order. It is helpful that all families submit their orders as early as possible, either at the in-person registration or soon thereafter, to ensure delivery by our first meet! If your swimmer’s suit from last year still fits, and is in good condition, you do not need to purchase a new one. As part of registration fees and dues, each swimmer will get a t-shirt with the team logo ~ we are redesigning these shirts for the 2017 season and the kids will love them! Parent or non-participating siblings may purchase team t-shirts, as well, for $17 per shirt. We always try to have extra goggles and caps for sale at home meets, but this is not guaranteed.

Items to consider for practice (optional, not required): Extra practice suit, swim fins (the team stocks some fins for use during the season, but having your own pair is helpful), mesh gear bag (helps dry things out quickly), back-up pair of goggles and swim cap, sweatshirt (mornings are cold, even in summer), tennis shoes & athletic wear (for dryland exercises on deck).

TEAM WEBSITE/FILE FOLDERS . . . COMMUNICATION

To improve team communication we rely extensively on the team website at . Each family must register through the website to become members of the team. Additionally, each family will have a folder in a file box at the pool. Ribbons and some team information will be placed in these folders, but the main source of information will be through the team website. It will be the responsibility of the parents and swimmers to check the website, their files, and emails/texts regularly. Please start at the beginning of the season to get in the habit of doing this; it will be the Head Coach’s and Parent Board’s main way of communicating with you.

POOL MEMBERSHIPS

The Hills West pool is available for membership to families outside of the Hills West subdivision for the 2017 swim season (Memorial Day to Labor Day). 2017 fees (both family and individual) will be coming soon. For more information, please call Hammersmith at 303-980-0700.

CAPITAL PURCHASES AND DONATIONS

The Hills West Waves can always use donations. Ideas for donations: cash, answering machine/telephone for pool office, long folding tables, tents, coolers, coffee pots, food supplies, etc.
