Scholarship Application Information

2014 Academic Scholarship

Applicants must be a current ASMC Utah Chapter member (military, civilian, or contractor), a member’s spouse, or their dependant.

Multiple academic scholarships will be awardedagain this year worth up to$1,000eachbased on the number of applications received in each category.

Applicants will compete in their designated category:

  • High School Students
  • Undergraduate Students
  • Graduate Students

All applicants must submit the following:

  • ASMC Application for Scholarship (attached)
  • Official transcripts: High School grades 9 - 12, and any College transcripts
  • Copy of Certified ACT or SAT test score
  • Personal letter stating and describing your educational and career goals. (150-300 words)
  • Please write 3 short essays (150 words maximum on each):
  • Discuss yourExtra-curricular activities.Describe your involvement, participation, and achievements in sports, music, arts, academics, etc.
  • Discuss your Leadership. Describe your leadership skills, abilities, opportunities, experiences, etc.
  • Discuss your Citizenship. Describe your involvement in and service to your neighborhood, community, church, or other organizations.
  • 2 Current (less than 2 years old) Letters of reference: These should be from two people with whom you are well acquainted but are not related, such as an employer, teacher, counselor, etc.

Applications must be received by 30 April 2014. Application packages will not be returned unless arrangements are made with the Scholarship Chairperson. For maximum points please submit ALL required documentation on or before the due date.
Judging Criteria

The Scholarship Committee, based on the judging criteria listed below, will determine the scholarship recipients and amounts to be awarded. The Committee's decision is final. Those selected will be notified in May 2014 and scholarship certificates will be presented during the annual ASMCPicnic.

Scholarship monies will be paid to the recipient when proof of registration is provided to the Scholarship Chairperson and ASMC Treasurer. The treasurer will then issue payment to scholarship winners in the form of a check.

Scholarships must be claimed within 12 months or one academic year or they will be forfeited.

Judging Criteria by category is as follows: (Five independent judges will judge each application and the committee chairperson will break any ties.)

Academics (60 points)

  1. GPA 30 points maximum
  2. ACT/SAT 10 points maximum
  3. CLASS DIFFICULTY 20 points maximum

Total Person (40 points)

  1. Personal Letter - 5 points maximum
  2. EXTRACURRICULAR and OTHER ACTIVITIES 10 points maximum - Evaluate from the standpoint of the "whole" person, the activities involved in and the achievements in each.
  3. LEADERSHIP 10 points maximum - Each candidate shall have demonstrated a high standard of leadership throughout their high school years. The applicant's acceptance of leadership responsibilities as well as participating in assistant or contributing roles will be considered.
  4. CITIZENSHIP – 10 points maximum - Each candidate shall have demonstrated a high standard of citizenship throughout their high school years. Service to community, church, or other organizations shall be considered
  5. Reference letters 5 points maximum
