4 Youth Brightlingsea, £458: Provision of activities and transport to venues for members of a youth club in Brightlingsea.

Beacon House, £1,000: To support the initial reception service at a Colchester based day centre for homeless people.

Braintree, Halstead and Witham CAB, £986: To run a series of presentations for vulnerable residents to increase awareness of the dangers of financial fraud and scams.

Braintree Youth Project Charity, £500: Towards a health and well-being project called 'Sorted' for young people in Braintree.

Canvey Island Youth Project, £1,000: To deliver drug and alcohol educational workshops to young people on Canvey Island and the surrounding area.

CARA, £1,000: Purchase of promotional material for use in sexual violence prevention education in the Colchester area and beyond.

Jack Deer and Chris Raven are receiving recognition for their involvement in the Rayne Boxing Club. Since 2011, the club, which was set up by Jack and is affiliated to the Essex Boys and Girls Clubs, provides a valuable diversionary opportunity for young people.

Colin Dobinsonreceives a High Sheriff Certificate recognising his work as a volunteer promoting the Crimestoppers initiative across the County.

East Thurrock Community Association, £750: Installation of a Key Card Door Entry system at the Community Hall.

Epping Forest Community Safety Partnership £750: To provide training courses to identify and help support victims of domestic abuse across the county.

Essex Boys' and Girls' Clubs, £1,000: To help deliver the Respect personal development project for vulnerable young pupils of secondary schools in the Colchester area.

Essex Outward Bound Association, £500: To help pay for Essex Volunteer Police Cadets to attend an outward bound course in Aberdovey.

Essex Retired Police Dogs Fund, £400: Promotional clothing and other items for a project to engage with young people from the Colchester area.

Footprints Community Group, £960: Provision of additional activity sessions to help address anti-social behaviour amongst young people in Rochford.

Gateway Community Media CIC, £750: To producecommunity advertisements, broadcast on Gateway 97.8 and made during safety workshops by young school children in Basildon, tackling issues of road safety and fire safety in the home.

Harwich Inspired Youth Action, run by Teen Talk, receives a certificate to recognise the work of the young people in developing a Crime Campaign to raise awareness of issues in Harwich.

Helping Hands Essex, £1,000: To support a rehabilitation service for people recovering from alcohol addiction in the Chelmsford, Braintree and Maldon areas.

InterAct Chelmsford, £1,000: Provision of a support service for vulnerable

young people with learning disabilities and/or additional needs.

Lads Need Dads CIC, £1,000: To help deliver a programme of supported activities for boys from the Clacton area who have an absent father.

London Bus Theatre Company £750: Provision of free alcohol awareness drama workshops to Year 6 pupils in the Canvey island area.

Loughton Youth Project £500: To help employ an assistant youth worker at a safe centre for local young people.

Melbourne Project, £1,000: Helping continue community work on the deprived Melbourne and Boarded Barns Estates in Chelmsford.

MenShed in Brentwood receives a Certificate to recognise the enthusiasm and commitment of those involved in helping to improve the safety and security of elderly and vulnerable residents.

Rayleigh Horticultural Society, £500: To install a CCTV system at the society premises to improve security and safety for visitors and volunteers.

Rayleigh Pubwatch,receives recognition to acknowledge the strong contribution which the scheme makes to community safety.

Southend Blind Welfare Organisation, £1,000: To provide instruction on safety in the home for visually impaired people in the Southend area.

Spark (a branch of Worth Unlimited), £1,000: To help run an after school youth club in the Loughton area to provide positive diversionary activities to 11-16 year olds.

SOS Rape Crisis, £750: Support for a project assisting women in prostitution or the sex industry in the Southend, Castle Point and Rochford areas.

Teen Talk Harwich, £1,000: To help with travel costs of young people attending Life Skills activities in Dovercourt and Harwich.

Uttlesford CVS, £500: Towards a new Uttlesford Community Gardening Project helping vulnerable, elderly and disabled people across Uttlesford district.

Voluntary Action Epping Forest, £500: To buy equipment for a garden maintenance scheme helping vulnerable, elderly and disabled people.

Voluntary Action Epping Forest, £500: To assist with the installation of enhanced Key Safes in the homes of vulnerable people in Epping Forest District.

WAY 2000, £1,000: To help pay for a confidential counselling facility for young people at the youth club in Waltham Abbey and those attending the local secondary academy.

Wilderness Foundation UK, £1,000: Support for the outdoor based TurnAround programme for vulnerable young people from mid and North Essex.

SHORTLIST FOR VOLUNTEER CENTRE ESSEX AWARDS

Cruse Bereavement Care (Epping Forest Branch): Staffed solely by volunteers, Cruse Bereavement Care provides support, advice and information to people of all ages when someone dies. Matthew Cleere has been a volunteer with Cruse since 2011 and is a fully trained counsellor. He says, “seeing clients move on with their lives is my reward for the work I do and shows everyone that the work Cruse does is so worthwhile.”
Dementia Adventure: Volunteers play a key role in this organisation’s support for people who are living with dementia and their carers. KarrenProbynhas volunteered for just over a year, providing support on adventure holidays and in the office. She says she feels very valued and part of the team. Everyone is treated equally and there is a feeling that they are doing something really special which does change people’s lives.
Lee Hood nominates Foundation 66for their outstanding support and development of volunteers. Lee was introduced to Foundation 66 after a personal struggle with a number of issuesl. Through the mentoring programme he was able to gain confidence, interact with his peers and ultimately became a volunteer. He says, “I was at a crossroads in my life and they saw something in me that somehow had been lost.” Lee is now a trained mentor and volunteer in Harlow with the Circles Farm criminal justice Work.
The Ideas Hub Chelmsford is a community facility where people can come together, share and learn. The Hub promotes art, culture, language, music and social and multicultural inclusion. Memory Kwada has been involved with the hub for many years and as a volunteer for the past 4 years. She says the Hub has been instrumental in influencing her life for the better. Training is tailored to the volunteer and support given to help them achieve further training and qualifications.
It is widely recognised that boys with absent fathers are far more likely to drop out of school, abuse alcohol, join gangs or go to prison. Lads Need Dads aims to address these issues and Yas Rai, who is a volunteer, nominates the organisation for the support it gives to the volunteers enabling young men to become more positive members of society.
In the 25 years since it was established Thurrock Mindhas seen demand for their services grow significantly. Volunteers are highly valued and are recognised as playing a fundamental role in the organisation. Roy Lambert nominates Mind for their commitment to both the volunteers and staff. He states that “the volunteering experience is a wonderful opportunity.”
