Opportunity for
High School Mathematics Teachers
3-Credit UWM Math Course
“Calculus: From Intuition to Rigor”
Through the Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Department of Mathematical Sciences is offering a free 3 credit course, MATH 675, Calculus: From Intuition to Rigor. This course is offered in spring 2008 for high school mathematics teachers in the Milwaukee Public Schools.
Through funding from the National Science Foundation (Grant No. 0314898), the MMP allows for waiver of resident, off-campus tuition at the undergraduate level. Audits will not be permitted. If you are currently enrolled in a graduate program in which the course fulfills a requirement, you may apply for a graduate tuition waiver. Participants receiving graduate credit will be expected to do additional assignments and coursework.
MATH 675 will deepen participants’ understanding of calculus by thoroughly exploring the fundamental ideas of the subject. A problem-solving approach will be adopted, especially at the start of the course, enabling calculus concepts to emerge as natural extensions of pre-calculus ideas. As the course proceeds, we will see how these intuitive ideas can be expressed in the rigorous language of modern mathematics.
Course Eligibility: The course is open to current teachers of mathematics in grades 9-12. For this offering of MATH 675, participants must meet the course prerequisite of three semesters of college calculus, or have taken UWM MATH 231 (or equivalent) and have evidence of strong skills in algebra. Participants who took these courses at an institution other than UWM must provide a transcript at the first class session as evidence of meeting the prerequisites. If space is available, consent may also be given to teachers of mathematics in grades 6-8 who satisfy the course prerequisites.
Course Meeting Time: Wednesdays, 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Dates:January 23–May 14, 2008 (class will not meet on 3/26)
Location:Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Room 224 (2300 W Highland Avenue)
Instructor: Dr. Kevin McLeod
Enrollment is limited to 30 participants. An application must be submitted no later than January 16, 2008. Late applications will be considered if space is available. You will be notified if you have been accepted into the course. UWM course registration will be completed at the first class session.
