High Horse and the Modern Day

High Horse was a young Native American man who had strong feelings about a young lady in his tribe. The things he did to gain the affection of this lady might, at first, seem outrageous and even somewhat creepy. However, on closer examination, it becomes obvious that even though High Horse's actions are in some cases extreme, at their fundamental level they are not that different from the actions of many today. In the Sioux short story,High Horse's Courting, the main character learns thatfinding a companion requires hard workand thatlove can cause a person to do crazy things;these themes are still very much a part of life today.

Body Paragraph #1 will have a topic sentence. That topic sentence will relate back to the first underlined theme in the thesis (in bold); it will also include the last part of the thesis which is in italics. Here's an example of what that topic sentence might look like.High Horse learned the hard way that getting the girl he wantsis quite a difficult endeavor; this is still the case for many young men today. Notice that the topic sentence talks about the first themeandhow it is still a part of life today. Now, I'm going to integrate a quotation from the text that supports the point of this paragraph. In the story, thenarrator says of High Horse that "he was sick to his stomach over the girl" thathe wanted (High Horse 2). This shows blah, blah, blah. You will notice that in the last bolded sentence, I set up the quote smoothly. Instead of just sticking the quote in there as its own sentence, I blend it together with my own words; this makes it sound as if it is my own sentence. Now, the rest of this paragraph willdiscuss howpeopletoday stillhave a hard time getting a companion. I might include an example. For instance, I might write:Like High Horse, people today still learn things the hard way, especially when it comes to finding a female companion. If a person goes to any lunch room in America, he will find examples of young men and women being rejected or dealing with sick feelings. Think of how many songs are written about lovesick boys and girls in pain over feelings for another.Without a doubt, thisidea is everywhere.
