Classroom Activities:

Reading: Our story this week was “Dot & Jabber and the Great Acorn Mystery.” This selection was informational fiction. We learned the mystery behind the way oak trees can begin growing in one area, even though they are far away from another oak tree where the acorns fell. We compared and contrasted oak trees to other trees, and detectives to scientists as a skill of comprehension. We were use to doing this because we just learned how to use Venn Diagrams in science.

High Frequency/Red Words: another, instead, among & none

Grammar: We had a familiar lesson in Grammar this week. Even though it is something I have been stressing ever since the beginning of the year, the students still tend to forget. All sentences begin with a capital letter, have a complete thought, and end with an appropriate punctuation mark! We have learned that statements end with a period, questions end with a question mark and a sentence that is full of emotion can end with an exclamation point.

Math: This week we took a quiz on Tuesday over the last four lessons of Unit 2. I was very disappointed in the scores on the quiz. We reviewed again Wednesday morning and it made a big difference on the test. The scores greatly improved. For the most part the students learned how to count by tens and add/subtract two digit numbers. The most difficult concept that some still haven’t grasped is when adding a two digit number by a one digit number. This sounds like it should be easy, but when they want you to break apart the one digit number to get to the next ten and then add on whatever is left over, it was hard for some to remember the steps. For example, 36 + 7 would look like 36 + 4 to make 40 + 3 = 43

Homework: Homework this week is the Spelling Worksheet Diphthongs oioy- Don’t forget that AR is also considered homework!! Students must read and return their AR books on Tuesday so that they can take their AR tests.

Science: We took a quiz reviewing what we learned in our Life Science Unit. The students did very well and really enjoyed learning about and observing plants and animals. Our next Unit is a combination of Earth and Space and Physical Science.

Bake Sales - I would like to make a request regarding the purchasing of goodies at a bake sale. To help our little leaguers raise money I encourage the purchase of goodies/donations. Please keep in mind however, I am only allowing your child to have one treat during our snack time and the rest is to be sent home. If your child comes with a large amount of money, please indicate how much should be used for treats, if you want change, or if some of it is going towards a donation. I don’t mind putting additional treats in a gallon size zip lock bag, but the possibility of treats being totally smashed in a backpack on the ride home is expected. Thanks!

This week was Secretary Appreciation Week! Thank you Mrs. Maule for all you do!
