INDEPENDENT STUDY: A PHASE APPROACH

INTEGRATED INDEPENDENT RESEARCH STUDY

SUCCESS CRITERIA:

1. Your integrated research paper will begin with a simple TITLE PAGE, followed by a TABLE OF CONTENTS. The research paper will have an appropriate title based on the hypothesis. This criteria is based on the format of a social science research paper.

2. Your INTRODUCTION, will clearly state the purpose of your study, what you, as the researcher, is attempting to do through the study and what results the researcher is attempting to achieve. The hypothesis or thesis statement or research question will be clearly stated and a brief outline of the method(s) used in the study will be described. The introduction will have any necessary changes from phase 1 and will be stated in sentence and paragraph style. (Essentially phase 1)

3. Your REVIEW OF LITERATURE (secondary research) will be presented next with any changes to its beginning (from the prior submission in phase 2) so that it follows well from the introduction. University Stream ONLY (must have 3Reviews of Literature)

4. Your description of your PRIMARY RESEARCH will be divided into two topic areas: a description of the RESEARCH INSTRUMENT and the reporting of the RESULTS OF PRIMARY RESEARCH.

When you describe your research instrument, the following will be included:

-a description of your research instrument: be sure to refer your reader to a blank copy in the appendix

-a rationale for the structure and design of key statements clarified

-target group explained and justified

In your report of the primary results, the following will be included:

- theresults categorized and expressed completely.

5. Your DISCUSSION AND INTERPRETATION will be an effective comparison and contrast of the primary results to the secondary research. Be specific by naming the secondary source using a reference (APA format). It will indicate a good understanding and wide knowledge of the subject area and a treatment of subject will show depth of thought.

6. The CONCLUSIONto your paper will...

-briefly restate the aims of the study

-summarize and speculate on the results

-suggest alterations or improvements to the instrument or methodology if necessary

-summarize how the aims were achieved or explain any shortcomings

-if possible, recommend ideas for further study, based on limitations and results of this study

7. A complete WORKS CITED will follow the conclusion in APA style.

8. The APPENDIX is the final section of the independent study report and will containa blank copy of the survey or interview questions, the completed survey or interview responses. Remember to direct your reader (in the appropriate section) to each part of the appendix.
